Clio Sport 182 slightly lumpy idle and advice!

  Clio Sport 182
Hi all, my first post so please be kind :)

Hope you can help. I've got a 05 plate Clio sport 182 (51k) with what I believe is the F4R engine? Basically it's got a slightly lumpy idle, and 'not quite right'. It 's become more noticeable at idle since I replaced the twisted bottom engine mount with uprated one.

It doesn't mis-fire and still goes like stink when I put my foot down. Occasionally the engine light with flash orange for a while when sitting in traffic but soon goes off. It's been like this for months now so I don't think anything is majorily wrong but it's bugging me. My friend has identical 182 and doesn't seem to have this lumpy idle so I don't think it's just what the 182 does but he hasn't uprated his engine mounts.

I was told by local garage that it could be coils but he wants to charge me 350 to replace them which I can't really justify when the car works ok! I don't think petrol consumption is up either as I'm still getting ~32mpg.

Do you think it could be coil? Does this car take pencil coils as someone else has told me? Can I try buying one coil and substituting one at a time until idle is improved?

Any other ideas guys? Other common faults with these symptoms

Btw - I love this car, I've had it 3 years, without issues (touch wood) and I rag the he'll out of it and it still comes back begging for more! It sill keeps up with most cars on road and is joy to drive - sorry slightly off topic there!

Cheers,
Paul

No pencil coils, coil pack...........and i dont think its a problem.

They are all very lunpy at idle, its what they do and as you have pointed out, the dog bone mount makes it more noticable.

You should get the car on a diagnostics (Clip or RSTuner) to see what the stored error code is from the flashing engine light though. I doubt its related tbh.

Does your mates have the dogbone mount done or is it remapped?

both of these will affect the lumpy idle greatly.

Welcome btw

Wow, thanks for the quick responses guys. Should have joined these friendly forums ages ago!

So to confirm, you don't think anything is majorily wrong with the car and it should idle a bit bumpy? Everything does seem a little 'harder' and bit more rattly since I put uprated dog bone mount. I only uprated it because original one went and there was a bit of play in engine.
Is it due to cams? I know cams 'screwed up' the idle on my orginal mini when I put £6000 1530cc race engine in it..it was so bumpy I literally bounced in the seat.

Ok so engine is an F4R engine with a coil pack (not pencil coils like garage said)?? And this coil pack is just one? I don't need to buy 4 of these from ECP? Assuming ECP is EuroCarParts?

My mates is completely standard ... or was it was stolen recently :-(
Mine is also completely standard (except the brakes and engine mount) - is it worth remapping?

Thanks!

Paul

remapping will help with the lumpy idle,
i think nearly all 172/182s have a lumpy idle i have just learned to live with it:)

Great - thanks for all the advise guys.
I don't mind the lumpy idle just so long as it's supposed to be like that!
It needs to survive until the new Megane RS is about 3 years old and much cheaper so I can buy one of those and remap that :)
I'm sure those will remap to about 300Bhp with a turbocharged lump in it. That's what I'll need in a bigger car for me to get rid of my 182..

Already had throttle body cleaned by the way - garage did that first. Although I doubt I'll be going to that garage again. Sounds like these cars need specialist garages.

Cleaning the throttle body is super easy. There's even a guide for it in the guides section :)

I know, I know, I should do alot of things on the car myself, but without a nice warm garage, proper tools and the time to do it.. I like someone doing for me :p
