clio sport starting problem

hi there, my clio 172 will not start, the starter motor just clicks, i have noticed there is a cable that is hanging out near the starter motor and i cant find where its meant to go, can anyone with a sport tell me where its meant to go please, i have attatched a picture of it.

also i have the dreaded UCH fault aswel, could that be related to the starter motor not working? or just a coincidence?

any help would be appreciated

have you tried rocking the car whilst in gear to release the starter motor just in case it is stuck?

Not sure what that loose wire is for...

av bumped started it and it goes first time, would that do the same as rocking it?

have you got a clio sport mate? would there be any chance you could have a quick look under your bonnet to see if yours is connected to anything please?

Are you sure it doesn't go into the whole on the gearbox directly in front of it in that picture? If no one answers by then, I will go out an have a look later this afternoon for you

na mate i tried that, thanks very much

i bumped started it and after a minute it started firing on 3 cylinders and the dashboard lights went mental and just started flashing, would a faulty UCH cause that? ive just took the uch out now and its getting sent to a specialist, has anyone anyone got any recommendations?

The connector is for the speedo transducer, which you don't have. Nothing to do with the starter.

Sounds like the starter motor, try giving it a wack with a hammer and see if it goes.

will a faulty uch make it run like a bag of s***? as i bump started it and its running horribly, dashboard lights gan off there nut and will barely rev.

No it won't, sounds like the alternator possibly isn't charging properly in that case. You need to get the thing starting under its own power before you go looking for other things wrong really.

Have you got a multimeter? When it's running check the voltage of the battery, if your alternator is working correctly it should be running at around 14.4v

Could well be this. But the lights on the dash didn't exactly go mental as you described, more it appeared that the car is 'dying' from lack of power.

A good test for the alternator is to put your wipers on. Do they arc across the screen really slowly - even on full speed? If it is the alternator - definitely get a price from an independant specialist. If you get it replaced (assuming you need the aux belt swapped too) - you could be looking at circa £650 for the job as a whole from a dealership.

ok mate thanks for your help. yeah the window wipers do go really slowly, and when i turn the key the clock on the dashboard goes off, it is looking more like a faulty alternator, i will get a multimeter on it tonight and maybe another battery on it aswell, if the battery is nearly dead and not charging would that cause it to fire on 3 cylinders? as the ecu will not be getting enough power.
