clio trip computer

i was just wanting to know if anyone has any idea how the clio trip computer, (or other renaults for that matter) works?
basically i wanted to know how it calculates te fuel consumption, mpg etc etc. does it monitor flow rates of fuel at the pump/injectors etc?
any info would be greatfully appreciated

Gets its readings from the ECU and the speed from the abs system.
