Clio vrs Golf

Heard lots about other CTR and Seat Leons, but not mention of Golf GTi's/GTTDi's.

Has anybody had a blast at one?? Who won??

I wouldn't have even considered a Golf with the Mk4s, over priced, heavy and well an old mans car; even the GTI is.

Not driven the new one, but I guess they do have a good write up.

Any 172 / 182 ought to be able to out do a Mk4 golf (expect R32 I guess).

I've had quite a fun run in with TDi Golfs on dual carriage ways, and they aren't bad once up to speed, but you can toy with them nicely ;)

Another reason for askin, my mate has just bought a Golf mk4 GTTDi, he now plans to get it chipped. He recon's about 190bhp.

Would the 182 still offer some competition??

MarkCup,

Your pick of the clio has red/orange wheels! Do you have a bigger pic for me to have a gander??

golf gti's arnt what there cracked upto be you no the turbo one's are only 150 bhp my mate's blown a r32 golf off in his mk1 172 and i was in the car so i no he wernt making it up

put a thread on MkV Golf GTI yesterday as had a drive in one on Saturday.

I thought it was ok but the turbo kicks in too early and it just can't get the power down - all to hectic early doors rather than our high revving pocket rockets :)

Then last night I was behind a one on the A41 from Watford and he was giving it some, but he wasn't gaining on me in any shape and form.

Take a look at the other thread in "other marques" as I gave a + 0 - grading (all personal opinion of course)

Had a pop with a G-TIT (gti turbo) and it was nowt special. Made him look like a right tool on the roundabouts, and after 50mph, he was a good 5/6 car lengths back.

No comparison really. The Mk4 2.8 litre V6 4Motion would provide pretty stiff competition, and R32 would beat us. Those are the only models that would provide us with any real stick.

  yep.
still behind.

why do some people on this forum have a problem with the fact that some cars are actually faster than a 172/182? :)

  Clio 182 Trophy
The new GTI is a fantastic car, but the mk4s were no where near as good. The basic 115bhp one was supposed to be pretty shocking, although I've never driven one.
The R32s are FAST.

My mate has a 2000 reg v6 4motion and it is stupidly quick, similar speeds till about 55 or so and then bang, its gone, much more than a few metres behind, more like 25 when i am hitting a ton..

...and my only defence i have come up with at the minute is ripping the piss at how much petrol he has to put in compared to me, lame i know...

Haven't got a problem with quicker cars, just interested.
Better to know before you ever take on one....;)

  Clio 172 mk2
I came from a faster car then my 172 but have no problem with it's performance...it's involving to drive, brakes well and does all this for a reasonable price:D

Not going by the times they were running at pod the other sunday... New and old r32's running low 15's and very high 14's over the 1/4.

It might technically be quicker to 100 and beyond but it's not faster...not that I care.

I traffic lighted a 1.8 TDi with a remap a couple of months back..
( member on here too ;) ... You know who you are :D )

Left me standing tbh, the torque is a lot more on the Golfs compared to the clio's so they have the grunt to compete pretty well with the remap. ;)

Only ever had a play with a Mk4 TDI, but that was in the 16v, not the 172. It just about kept up til about 70, then he just sailed past. I took my foot off at about 95 anyway cuz I like my license but you could just tell the torque on one of those would keep it going like that for quite a while. I'd have a tdi over the gti any day, mk4 gtis are pap. Apparantly it's the same tdi engine for different power versions, just a different chip. I'm sure you can quite easily get close to 200bhp out of one with a remap and with all that torque too it should shift.

Diesels are catching up in the speed stakes. For example, any one had a tussle with a 120d M-Sport Beamer or a Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI? Both with 160ish bhp (i think the beamer has a few horses more), together with RWD (on the beamer), and FWD on the Cupra, still very rapid for what they are, and with a chip and / or remap are pretty stupid!

In standard trim we would win, but chipped, they can be a real pain, i.e if they caught you in the wrong gear and they would be gone!

Used to have a Fabia vRS and had experience of chipped diesels mainly the PD130 ones. In standard form, the 182 will eat one alive. Chipped it'll be closer, but only the PD160/170 chipped would manage to beat a std 182. PD150 would be close, 130 would be slightly behind.

Most chips unleash 170 bhp, and a lot of torque yes, but they still dont have the rev range and they still weigh a HELL of a lot.

And once they'd knakcerred their clutch (common problem) then it'd be all over :D

  Ph1 172 / Ph1 Valver
^^^^ It was those 2 I was talking about, I'd been told the PD130 and PD150 were the same engine, just a different chip. That's why when I was considering one to chip I was looking for a 130, as they're cheaper and I was replacing it anyway eh! Never driven one though

For me personally, I'd rather chew my own arm off than own a GTi - even the Mk5. The exception to the rule is that I just love the purity of the Mk1 GTi - but you're hardly likely to find a decent example now, not easily anyway.

Tbh, I thought I was giving them a bad rep - not so much the GTis themselves, but the people who drove them. That was until yesterday when I had two seperate black Mk4 GTis sat on my rear bumper. I purposely drove at 29.9mph to piss them off and the moment they edged closer, I dropped a gear and shot off. Totally childish, but they bring out the worst in me.

They all seem to put 25" alloys on - have their windows heavily tinted and have sh*t private plates. Middle management bellends.... ;) :rasp:

I had a Leon Cupra R running around 300bhp + 300lbs/ft with a map, exhaust and some other tweaks till it was nicked! Not sure how the 182 would have faired against it to be honest!
The Golf GTI's run the smaller K03 turbo where the Cupra R runs the same larger K04 turbo as the Audi TT and S3.
The PD150 diesels with a remap put down alot of torque well over 320 lbs/ft, acceleration is phenomenal but they run out of steam at higher speeds.

A mate of mine has a Leon Cupra TDI, esentially the same as the Golf GTTDI with 150bhp. We were coming back from Centre parcs a couple of weeks ago down the A66 to Scotch Corner and had some good laughs. At one point he tried passing so I thought I would test my acceleration in 5th against the might of 250 lb/ft of torque. He was less than 1 car length behind when I sarted to accelerate and he couldn't get past. Mid range though was impressive and was neck and neck with the Clio.
Nice drive back.Keswick to Leeds in 1 hour 15 mins.

I did have a play with a golf tdi with the two red letters and to be honest the pulling in the golf with that torque is good from say 50-70 the golf flys and the clio is crap tbh you stay in 3rd and have to wait for the 5000rpm or change to second and change half way though your overtaking there is nothing in between so if you are following one at say 45-50 and go to overtake and they put there foot down you do struggle untill you hit the 5000rpm and then see ya from standing the clio would be quicker but from a rolling start i found it hard work following the golf i allways take notice of the red letters dont like looking like a clown

i took a mates v5 mk 4 golf round the ring, in 9m40 and i've never heard so much noise from a set of tyres in my life, lol I was convinced it was still squeling on the straights, thats a pedestrian pace but according to the tyres it had had enough, too much roll, and too fat, the people watching at Brunnchen were impressed as it noisely understeered its way round, lol considering they have 170hp, makes the clio feel like a ferrari by comparison.

I'm getting a DSG'd mk v in two months i'll let u know how it compares to the 172.

The world is longer than a 1/4 mile.
Those that know will understand a 3.0 v6 after 80 mph will pull on a 2.0 clio all day

LOL ^^^ sounds about right.

I've only ever driven a V5 Mk4; everything was so numb I really had no idea what was gong on at the front, back, or anywhere in between.

You're right Ian, the world is far longer than a 1/4 mile...how straight is it after that first 1/4 mile then?

i agree that i think an r32 if being driven by the right guy would hammer a 172, i spend lots of time on the autobahn half my customers are in germany, and the clio will not pull much on a 130/150 hp deisel passat, let alone the golf with the same engine, and if for a secong u forget to drop it into forth, it'll be right on your bumper on a 5th gear 70mph start. that clio has to be up above 5k or it wont go like a deisel. Dont mention 330D Bmws, i have a video of one of those making my 172 and toms 182 looking silly. LOL
