Clio vs. MX5 round a track?

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
Just wondered how they compare since the mx-5 is known as one of the best chassis ever made and the clio is also well known for its handling, i know they're different drives etc, just wondered how they matched up as i saw a few vids on youtube of porsche GT3's getting owned by mx5's in a twisty part of the nurburgring, then the GT3 was gone as soon as they got onto a straight.

Thats a video showing what i was on about, its not the 1 i was after, one i saw was a 1.6 mx-5 overtaking a GT3 through a twisty section of the ring but can't find it now.

at oulton park the clios went past the mx5's like they were in reverse, but they only had novices behind the wheel i believe

i think you'd have to be a pretty good pilot to keep up with a clio round oulton

my money would be on the clio, mrs had an eunos roadster s-limited, it handled pretty good, but in a different league to my williams

Assuming you match drivers and you're talking about standard spec in both cars I'm sure you'd see the clio, win based on superior power to weight and overall power.

But there's plenty of aftermarket upgrades for MX-5s including turbos so relatively easy to create an MX-5 that will beat the clio in standard format.

Last time I was at Bedford there was a heavily modified MX-5 on slicks that was pretty much munching up GT3's. Part car (probably mostly driver).

Good driver in an MX-5 will have little trouble beating a novice in a Clio.

In my experience, a standard MX-5 isn't that quick. I think they are designed to be fun, whilst not necessarily being devastatingly fast. I did have one surprised MX-5 owner come over to me in a pit lane after a session and ask what kind of engine was in my Clio, I suspect he thought I would be easy pickings :rasp:

I know the vid i posted i spa mate, i said i can't find the one at the ring that i was lookin for :p

I had a feeling that my mate had overhyped them a bit, you guys seem to be confirming it.

He now has an S2000 but before he got that he had 3 MX-5's (2 got written off) and told me the only reason he got his S2000 is because its the only car he's come across that he found it hard to stay with round the back roads.

I knew they weren't astonishingly fast in a straight line but i figured they'd be taking corners alot faster than most cars to make up for it.

I've seen the MX5 challenge cars on the track on the marshals days we've had, and believe me, they're awesome! Probably something to do with the loons that race them so know the limits of the cars. There's not much that gets past them anywhere on the track!

I was thinking almost the exact same thing today!

Keep the 172 when I replace it in a few years (strip completely, coilies, decat and few engine mods) or sell it and turbo an MX5 and sort suspension.

Not tracked the 172 yet, so no idea how I'd like it or not, but some of the videos on here show what it can do. RWD would probably be more fun though.
