Clutch Change!!

Right i have just go myself (courtesy of MAXIBOY, Thanks pal) a Group N Spec, 3 piece uprated K-Tec clutch for my willy!!

The Engine and Gearbox are connected and sitting on a pallet in my workshop at the moment!

What i want to know is, how hard is it going to be for me to replace the old clutch myself for my nice new one?

Anyone got a "how to" or can explain to me in not too great a detail what i should be careful of i.e is anything spring loaded and gonna fly across the workshop when i disconnect the gearbox etc!!

Is it just a matter of undoing the bell housing bolts on the gearbox and it will just drop out or is there more to it?

I have got a Haynes manual at home but forgot to pick it this morning before work! and am hopefully gonna go straight to the workshop rather then home first as its about 30mins away from work!!

Cheers for your help Boys n Girls

It is very easy if box and engine are on a pallet. Undo all the bolts and nuts round belhousing. Do ones at starter also, but leave starter rear bracket alone (you can leave starter exactely where it is.). Then wiggle box free (might be a little stickey, make sure all bolts and nuts are undone), it should slide out fairly easily. Clutch is then held on with a few allan key bolts, undo these (watch out it will all probably fall into it component pieces when these are undone, just remember how it goes). You can then put your new clutch friction plate on, followed by pressure plate, tighten up the bolts till it is just holds friction plate, but will still let u move it around. I dont have a clutch alignment tool so had to play about moving friction plate till i reckoned it was dead centre, use your eye, or something of similar thinkness to shaft, to get it as close as you can to centre. Then tighten up allankeys to correct torque. Now you should also change clutch release bearing which should be on shaft inside bellhousing, refit new one with a little grease (usually supplied) making sure wee locating tab slots correctly onto release arm (will be fairly obvious), then stick gearbox back on (it will require a little shuffling, depending on how well you centred clutch but should be sound, and then tighten bolts and nuts, making sure starter is lining up correctly. Hope this helps let us know if anything else, you r unclear about

Cheers fella that sounds like quite a good "How To" to me!!

One thing! Will my new clutch have a new clutch release bearing or is that bought seperately?

Also what does a clutch alignment tool look like? you got any pics?

I will have a look on the net to see if i can get a pic of one!!

hehe, would have said the same myself.

it is easy cos when i got the old engine out of mine i had to split the box while someone waited for my engine and i did it in about 15 minutes. never done it before either hehe.

The hardess problem when changing a clutch is getting to the bloody thing, if its (engine and gearbox) on the floor of your workshop youre on to a winner already!

Yeah its all nicely tied to a pallet on the workshop floor, i have a engine lift as well so i will be able to lift it clear of the pallet for easy access!!
