Clutch Clunk on Mk2 172

Hi

Quick query about my 172.

When sat at traffic lights or similar, and i put clutch in and select 1st gear, there is a "knock/clunk" as i put it in gear. However if i put the clutch in, wait a second or two and then select 1st , there is no knock/clunk"!!! This happens all the time not just when i first set off in the car.

is this normal? If not anybody got any clues whats up!

Mine does it, as far as I know its a common thing and is nothing to worry about*..

When I spoke to Reno about its (cos the 172 was in for a service) they said could be the clutch or gear box with problems!! Cars only two years old, good old Reno, finger on pulse as usual!

Anybody else had this clutch "knock/clunk feature"?

Haha! Clutches and gearboxes are really strong on the 172 - hardly ever hear of problems. The clunk thing, on the other hand, is really common.

To be fair to the dealer, if they havent sold a lot of 172s they might not know about this - we have them at a bit of a disadvantage here with so many owners.

I engaged 3rd gear about 4-5 times around brands and had absolutely nothing lol.

Mine clunks aswell, so does my mates new 182 cup.

Mine clunks too, it also clunks when reversing up hills but I think thats the other common 172 engine mount problem, makes you wonder why you bought one!!!

Yup. Although only if its been left idleing in neutral for a while. Very light clunk upon selecting first.

The previous owner of my car had the gearbox replaced under warranty because of the 1st gear clunk (when the car only had a few miles on the clock) mine doesnt clunk now its on 36K miles, but it used too, maybe its just loosed up now.
