Clutch Just Broke - eek!!

Hiya,

I was wondering whether someone can tell me whether my clutch has gone altogether or just the cable?

I was in 2nd & then went to change to 3rd and it wouldn't go in - tried to put it back in to 2nd - it went into gear but there was no power when I pressed accelerator - just the revs went up.

Pulled over and tried to move but nothing - it goes into gear fine just no bite or movement.

Oh yes - and when I press accelerator the pin goes up.

So really there's just no bite = movement!!

Goes into gear fine - i just checked after reading other peoples' posts.

had this myself. was u goin hard? mine was a o/s driveshaft. looks like it is that!!!!

If the clutch had gone it wouldn't go into gear without a nice horrible grinding noise if you was forcing it, and you woulnt be able to hold it in gear at idle without it stalling. It is possible its the box itself if you are reckoning the lever is going into its position as if it was in a gear.

If it was a shaft gone surely the AA or whoever toed you home would have seen thiswhen getting it onto the dolly. ad t would have gone into 3rd

cant see it till the shaft is off as its a dry shaft and the teeth have gone.

Sounds like this, I had the same. Proper annoying but a cheap fix!

Further to my post last Saturday my car has been in the garage since Thursday & it turns out the problem is not my clutch after all (after paying £150 for a 3-part clutch kit).

It turns out I actually need a new gearbox which at the moment I've had a quote of £403!!

The garage originally thought I would be able to have the broken part of the gearbox fixed but when they've come to take it out my car the gearbox is a total mess.

They say it'll be cheaper to buy a whole one rather than replace the broken parts.

Any ideas where to get a gearbox in good condition @ a reasonable price for a 2000 172?

Second hand ones go for around £250 upwards from cars being broken but these are hardly new! £403 doesnt seem to bad really but what does that include? Ive heard of rebuilds costing over double that.

It's a quote from Renault Specialists. Used gearbox @ £325, delivery @ £25 & VAT @ £52.50 = £402.50.

Just Renaults have quoted £300 for a used with £45 VAT.

Waiting for a couple more quotes yet off partsgateway.

I the gearbox specific to the car model or will any renault gearbox do?

JC5-089 = Ph1

JC5-129 = Ph2 cup

JC5-130 = 172 Ph2 non cup

Probably be the same dodgy one they sent me that I sent back. For peace of mind spend the extra 50-100 quid getting a rebuld mate! A new gearbox for 100 extra is better than one for hundred cheaper with 50k miles on it!

I'm still going to get it fitted soz. Clutch hasn't gone yet but it will do shortly so I may as well as get it all done at the same time as me gearbox.

I've just read on here that a cup gearbox is just as good as an alternative for a ph1 172.

Is this true as there's about 3 on ebay for £275 - £300?

The re-furb'd box i have available is from a cup.

They have a lower final drive ratio giving slightly better acceleration
