Clutch problems?!

Hi there everyone,
So my clio has been been giving me a bit of trouble since I bought it. Sometimes it will not go into second gear at all, and after pumping the clutch I can force it in with a bit of a grinding sound, sometimes it will work fine. This has also happend with first gear. Also on occasion I have found it popping out of gear on its own?
A friend from works boyfriend, who is a mechanic took it for a drive to see if he could see the problem and suggested that the clutch is on its way out. Thing is he quoted me £450 for repair/replacement. Does this sound about right or should I find another mechanic?

Renault quote 8 hours labour plus the clutch at about £120.

I've got another family friend I'll get a quote from, at least I know what to expect now.
As for Renault, I could have guessed it would be something ridiculous like that, considering they wanted 150 quid for a key.
