Clutch Release Bearing

  S2000
I have had a screeching noise occasionaly on gear changes for some time now and had thought it was the clutch release bearing but as it wasn't to be heard often and it's not affecting driveability I have yet to replace it.

Tonight though I noticed that you can hear it rattling when the car is idling and it stops if you press the clutch pedal down. I just wondered how many miles is it likely to be OK for (bearing in mind the rattle has just begun and is still quite a faint noise) before it gives up and what will happen if it does give up before I get t he chance to replace it?

Thanks.

There is the potential for it to bugger up the clutch - if it breaks up - but then you would prob be fitting a new clutch anyway.

I really would do as little miles as humanly poss untill you can get it done.
It could last a while - but then it could start to break up !!

Yeah, I'll be replacing the clutch when the bearing is being replaced. I'll try and keep the miles down as best I can but I'll need to use it for getting to work - only a few miles a week though. If my garage was cleared out then I could change it now but it's full of crap and needs cleared out.

Does anyone have any idea of the sort of milage that would be involved before it would be likely to go?
ANy milage can depedn on use mine went at 6k or so I think (the rest of the clutch broke so were not totally sure. But the car had been 1/4 miling hard.

Mine lasted about 5k after i noticed the noise, that was just normal day to day driving, then a bit of welly at the weekend :)

Can't really put a timescale on these sorts of things

Thanks. I know you can't really put a timescale on it but I just wanted a rough idea if we were talking 10's or 1000's of miles. LIke I say it's been giving the odd screeching noise for about 5000 miles but it's only started to make a rattling noise in the last few miles.

Mole - was it when you had the RT engine in yours that it went and if so how difficult a job did you find it to be replacing it?

All my Clio's made this screaching noise, if I let of the clutch too quick or try and pull away in 2nd or if i increase the revs before letting the clutch fully out during a gear change.

I've done 10k hard driving miles and the noise is still the same, but the car still lives, touch wood.

my clutch bearing is like that on idle, as soon as its warmed up and had a 5 minute drive it stops completely. been like it for about 6 months

As long as it's not slipping I wouldn't worry about it mate, I never have.
Just don't take the plss with dumping the clutch and you should be okay.

kl, anyone else got any opinions? I reckon I might change it when I get the chance anyway or I'll always be abit wary about it.

Yeah changing it would be the smart option (hence why I'm not doing it :p) only if you cannot afford to have the car off road unplanned.

Otherwise, well this is how I see it you've got to get the clutch out regardless to sort it so you might as well have a new clutch put in so get as much use out of the current one as you can.
