Clutch Screech and Engine Tap

  Oyster Card
Hi just a couple of questions for the weekly problem.

My clutch screeches sometimes when I pull away, people look at me like I'm doing a wheel spin which I'm not, anyone know what it is and means. All gears select fine and works as it should.

Also the engine sounds quite tappy, I know for sure at least one of my HT leads is knackard it's being held on tight by just tin foil inside as the seals gone.
Would I benifit from new HT leads, also would they affect fuel mpg?
I've looked at the other end of the HT leads and they look weird inside like they've got white powder in.

definitely change the HT leads, while your at it change the dizzi cap and rotor arm aswell, when where your plugs last changed ?

as for the engine tap, are you using Castrol Magnatec oil ?........if so, at your next change use something else

anyone klnow anything about the clutch screech? Mine (mk1 1.4RT) sometimes makes a screeching noise when changing gears. The noise only lasts for about a second but I don't know what causes it or whether it indicates that there is a problem that needs sorting. It also appears to happen randomly - most of the time the noise won't be there when you change gear but then some days it's there almost all the time and doesn't seem to be related to conditions (cold/warm etc).

Anyone?

Thanks. What exactly is the thrust bearing??

How easy/costly is it to replace and is it something I could probably do myself?

Should I get it changed asap or will it be OK to run it like that for a while?

Also donsrno i dunno if yours is the same but my clutch is really jumpy for the first few miles and won't like going in 1st when slowing down to come to the lights or something.

clutch is on its last legs.get ya wallet out!!

Who was that directed to???? (crosses fingers it's not me)

I hope it's not me as I couldn't afford a new clutch, LOL. The noise has been there for a while but my clutch feels fine and I don't really have any problems with it.

Donsrno1: thrust bearing is what pushes against the diaphram of thew clutch, as the clutch is spinning with the engine it needs to be able to spin itself. They are cheap enough, but the gearbox has to come off to do it.

No it was directed at acid zero.

its fine to drive with it,but not for 1000's of miles, try and get it done.

Thanks Danlp6. I'm guessing thats going to cost me quite a bit in labour to do at a garage?

Roughly how much is it likely to cost?

Lol cheers I was wondering what will finally kill my car, it only cost £350 anyway so when the clutch gives up I'll just buy a new car.

Any rougth guesses how long I can expect to get out of it, say got the screach problem as donsrno has but when my car is old the clutch is quite jumpy for a good five minutes.
