Code readers

  172 MKII FF
Hi,

These code readers which you can buy from K-Tec or off eBay to diagnose fault codes (rather than take them to Reno) are they any good?

I'm thinking of buying one because my car seems to have trouble starting sometimes (cleaned TDC sensor). Where about would the plug be? I have an import 172 if that makes any difference.

Plug is underneath the ashtray.

I got mine 2 weeks ago, they seem to cover alot but my only fault has shown as N/A.

The fault code machines will nto display ALL fault codes which maybe wrong with the vehicle.

You need a specific Clip Diagnostics Machine to get a full list of codes that maybe effecting your car.

These are simply "standard" codes that are available when the Engine Management Light comes on.

So dont be fooled into thinking i cant find any codes on my car..... Renault will be able to see the "hidden" codes.

Spot on Dave.

Thats the only proper tool to get your faults from your lil Renault.

Hence the Diagnostics Charge being pretty high from Renault. Best bet is to find an independant Specialist who has the equipment and pay to have it checked when you need to rather then waste money on cheap tools.

rentec sorted my air bags out last time but thats over 100 miles away, i need someone in essex with one of these tools.

anyone know a garage with clip before i post in the dealers section

it's pretty impressive what you can find out with the proper clip reader. my car has always had a lumpy idle since i had a load of different work done, which i put down to the 182 manifold. but last time it was plugged in at sg's they had a look into it and found out that it was the knock sensor at low revs because of the increased compression.

Hi, just want to ask, if those code readers that you can buy from ebay or k-tec will for example show you a code error DF049? Why do they show errors starting with "P" only?
Thanks Miro
