Coil Spring

  Clio 1.2
Right i got my car serviced the other day and the person doing it pointed out that my front passenger side coil spring was splitting into two. I really do not have the money to pay for anything expensive and i want to just get it through the mot as thats the only it will fail on. its a 1998 mk2 ph1 but i have no other details about the car as all i do is drive it to college and back - less then a mile. Would this spring be okay? and also how much can i expect it to cost for fitting? ive been quoted 70 pounds is that good?

£70 to fit one spring sounds ridiculous mate, its a 10 min job or so! Go to a scrap yard and buy the single speing you need? Won't cozt you much!

Pick up a spring from the breakers or something mate. £70 for spring fitting is obscene.... it's literally a 20 minute job from start to finish.

i just need a place that will fit it tho mate. cars doing head in, back box, then center pipe, now this in the space of a week. Need to get it through mot but need cheap place. what you reckon i should look for price wise? i know the backs are easier but the fronts take a bit more time.

Where abouts do you live mate? I'm sure you'll find someone on here that will do it for £25 or so.... even if it takes an hour, it's worth it.

Its a pretty simple job mate, even if you'd not done it before you could do it yourself, you only need a drop neck spanner for the top mount, a basic socket set to undo the strut and spring clamps. But as jack said, you'll have someone in your local area that should do it for you off here

labour is usually 35-45 an hour i thought? if you take it to them your wasting major money. why wont you do it yourself?

would help if you said where you are, then someone local might know if they are local ;)

For reference, I charge £67.50 to fit a full set of springs, fully inclusive. to fit one it would be about £25, although i'd advise to always change springs and shocks in at least axle pairs

a spring is going to be cira £30 add an hour to do it then £70-£75 ain't bad, would be what i'd charge!

there you go, £15 compressors, £20 spring

rob, what are your thoughts on running one old spring one new spring?

i personally would be tempted to go for an old one if i was only changing one, maybe keep some sort of equality. but then you run the risk of getting one that may only last a year. not saying that robs springs are dodgy of course ;)

edit: listen to rob though, he's the expert :)

3 month warranty on the used spring ;) (But pretty sure it will last ages don't sell rusty or old looking springs)
12months on the new spring ;)
