What is your budget? What you consider silly to some might be perfectly acceptable. Also what are you after from your coilovers (handling, looks, road, track etc)?
I also like the Spax setup, but appreciate that they are out of your budget.
New withing budget the best option appears to be the Vmax ones, but I prefer a decent set of springs and good oem shocks over them it terms of ride/handling. (how low do you want to go?). Second hand might be something to consider, be carefull on condition and spec. Look out for H&Rs that should come in budget second hand.
If thats your budget i would forget coilovers and go for the koni dampers/eibach spring route tbh mate! i would only consider coilovers if they were a make such as bilstein or kw and were going to have them set up properly ie having the car coner weighted and all of the geometry set up etc.
Don't buy coilovers for less than 400 pounds they will be terrible, much better off saving up and getting something decent in the spring time, winter is hardly the time for epic lowz init
you can go for AP coilovers, that are the KW V1 steel version. i've got them now for cca 17.000 km and no problems, i even raised them now when i changed my winter tyres and no signs of corrosion, the ring being stuck or whatsoever.
With only a brief drive of your car I can immediately tell that they are a very good coilover. Not harsh, nor bouncy, spot on.
If I was to go for coilovers these would definitely be my first and only choice.
Personally if I were you I would wait and save. The last thing you want is to spend £400 on some cheap coilovers and then a year later be lumbered with some leaky cheap coilovers. Also, they will probably handle worst than the current setup you have for "fast road". The saying "buy right, buy once" is so true. I believe you should not save money on things like suspension, brakes and tyres. The three most important components.
