coilovers

Car  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
hiya guys my gaz coilovers are seriously too hard for my area, at the moment my 172 is sat 90mm low on 17's. it looks soooo good but i cant justify the ride quality especially in the area i live in.

i want to keep the 17's on but was wondering if i changed to spax 60mm springs and standard shocks would that make a big difference to ride quality and looks?if anyone has any pics of their clios on 17's and lowered 40-60mm that would be wicked!

i had 40mm spax springs on my last car and they were pretty decent. any advice welcome!

thanks guys!

as requested although not just on springs - has H&R coilovers - bit too low for great handling but looks spot on in my opinion

probably loads better than on the Gaz's. The ride round town is more than acceptable - on motorways etc its fine. Only time it bothers me is if Im on an uneven road with lots of ups and downs - the suspension is set so low that the car tends to bottom out and hit the bumpstops too early making the car feel loose and unsteady - but this is only on real bad roads - think Ill take mine to Mark Fish Motorsport next year to set it up properly - only problem is I still want it to look good with the 17's - got to find a good compromise.

Maz's is a good height - with 17's it would look fine I think - only problem with those springs are they are surposed to be a bit harsh when you hit a bump but still if you havent got £800 for a set of coilovers then they are definately the option I would get

I learnt that the hard way with coliovers they are all about compromise, you have to compromise the ride hight for handling on everyday roads ..

Apex are fantastic for looks but the handling is gash tbh

Should have listened to me :p and the fact that Ross Gary and Mike wanted shot of the Gaz promptly after me would have been a bit of a warning sign too ;)

i think ill give gaz lot a ring tomorrow and let them know the situation. even though they are £400 (cheaper than the rest) its still alot of money maybe if those guys who arent happy with the coilovers can let me know maybe then can sort something out for us?

I have sold mine now, lost alot of money on them, iirc GAZ said they didn't do any R&D on the Renault Sport Coilovers .. maybe thats their problem ..

Good luck

I sold mine on too also lost money. GDI didnt want to know nor did GAZ so you'll be pissing in the wind if you think anything will happen. As long as people keep buying their kits they wont bother spending time and money on R&D. I'll never deal with either company again as long as i live poor product and abysmal customer service.

H&R all the way.

Apex would be the best bet but, as said above and from personal experience, they're not the best. But the fact they're around 80 quid and you can fit them easily, you can't grumbe really.

There is no other spring that lowers a sport clio, certainly not the Eibach range.

i contacted gaz today and made a bit of a kick about the harshness of the ride and they suggested i play around with the dampers etc...i said ive tried all that and its either like jelly or like the car has not tyres on it, they told me to come in to their workshop n they will have a look at it, so ill be going there on thursday so fingers crossed.

bdw maz when your car was like 'jelly' did it get over bumps and bad eneven roads ok?

damper settings will not alter the harshness of the ride.. you should have them on as soft a setting as possible to avoid the car becoming skittish.

Gaz are harsh IMO due to the quality of the product .. I've been pleased in the past with Leda though. Handbuilt certainly not cheap but they're going on my next car also

You truely are wasting your time, I forget who but i think it was either LEDA, or BenR but someone had one of their dampers on a piece of equipment that tests damping curves and they were all over the f**king shop, absymal!

It was sooooooo unpredictable I didn't know if it was actually going to do what I wanted to .. it was scary

I know it's not what you want to hear but spending that little bit extra makes a huge difference. The Clio works so well sa standard that for me the only upgrade option to ensure handling was IMPROVED and ride not diminished was by fitting LEDAs. See Below. -50mm
