Complete Beginner - Cudey's Project thread.

Hi Guys,

As the title suggests, i'm a complete novice when it comes to cars - to the extent of where I've never removed a wheel or even jacked a car up!! The only thing I've done is wash a car (Have attempted waxing once, but by no means successfully). Now, that is hopefully going to change! Will start with basic jobs, then will see how it goes. Hopefully this should provide some of you with some entertainment :)

I bought my Monaco 172 around May 2013 having previously owned a 1.2 8v Clio, which was my first "real" car. I say "real" as I did own a Fiesta, but that lasted 5 minutes until it met a metal fence. Was a very lucky escape as I missed an old dear by about an inch. I walked back home that morning and received confirmation of my ownership through the door. I then bought the Clio which I owned for 5 years and was a great little car for me, but reached 120,000 miles and needed a fair bit of work. I ended up giving it away for free to a family friend who are mechanics, on the basis that they would fix the issues and keep it going - and they did and it's still on the road.

So, after owning a 1.2, I wondered what it'll be like to have the sport - and well it was like love at first sight. An awesome car, and still puts a smile on my face. It was within my budget, and at the time had around 60,000 on the clock. I've since stuck about 9,000 onto it, and here's a picture as of today. (I'm terrible with photography!!)

I don't think it's too shabby. Though does have it a few flaws which i'll come on to later.

The car does come with "full service history"..... though it's unreadable in places as the previous owners missus's stuck it through the washing machine :nono: With this in mind, I set out to get the belts and dephaser changed for peace of mind. I looked up specialists near me, and settled on taking it down to the lads at S&MWM. Must be said, I can't recommend these guys enough, great customer service, and fantastic work. If you're around London and looking for someone check these guys out. The car felt completely different and pulled really well.

A few months went by with nothing worth noting until recently. I have the MOT due in the coming months, and the lads at S&MWM had picked up a few things which needed attention in the future. So recently I took it back to them to fit new steering rack bushes, new brake discs and pads, a new water pump (The old one stopped working - James commented that there was a weird brown sludge in the bottom of the tank where a previous owner may have stuck oil in there :nono:) I also treated myself to the RSTuner. The car now drives fantastically.

However, being a 53 plate it is coming up to it's 11th Birthday and it's about time I start looking after it, and thought i'd try learning bits myself. So today I set myself the task of restoring my headlights. Not a huge job, but a nice little way to start I feel. I searched a lot of threads on here to find out what to do, and picked up a few bits last night. I tried to take some pictures before and after, but the photo didn't come out great.

Perhaps could have been a little better, but I was quite pleased for a first ever attempt :)

Next, I have a few bits to look into. Firstly I have to replace the brake pedal switch - Should hopefully be straight forward, though trying to find the correct part online. Then, this is the current state of my passenger side fog light:

I intend to do this myself, which will be a first for me with jacking a car up. Will post the progress on this thread when the time comes.

Now, I unfortunately stuck a scuff on it when I first got it. I went down to the local hospital early in the morning and for some reason they have a ridiculous base around there lamposts which includes a high curb that takes up half the space :( I didn't see it and this was the result.ujts.jpg - There's also a few marks on the front bumper because of it.

I'm still in the process of thinking about future bits I could do. The Engine Bay definitely needs some attention (Will try to get a picture soon)

Really nice car mate, can't beat a nice clean Monaco. Shame about the scuff on the bumper, bet you were gutted (been there myself :dapprove:).

The RSTuner makes such a difference doesn't it? I did mine earlier in the week and can't believe how smoothly it runs now.

Cheers mate :). I was really gutted. I was going to the hospital to have a blood test which I hate anyone, so scuffing the bumper made it twice as bad :( Hopefully I can fix it, or get it fixed. Going to have a go tomorrow at the interior which needs a good clean, and hopefully asses the scuff to see what can be done.

I love the RSTuner, it's certainly made a big difference. One problem I do have at the moment is vibration through the steering wheel at about 70 or 80, so think a wheel balance is in order, otherwise really pleased with it so far.

I managed to catch the rear quarter on a Fiesta ST I had. Cost me £380 to put right!!

Regards the vibration through the steering wheel, as you say most probably the wheels need balancing.

Im really liking monaco atm, i spotted one in my local village today, it had gold standard wheels and looked really well tbh.

I didn't know how to do anything mechanically a few years ago just like you, now after being on the forum and attempting everything myself I have made a lot of progress! Changed over bumpers, changed break pads, install new springs, refurbed alloys, lots of trim painting. I really enjoy it

Hopefully I can follow your path. Did you ever do anything seriously wrong in the process? That'll be my only worry as it's my only car, so is my daily driver. Refurbing the alloys is another task i'd like to try as mine are rather curbed (I have to take the blame for most of it, I'm not the best at parallel parking), how did you go about finding this out mate? Is there a guide kicking about please?

Thankfully I have done nothing seriously wrong though I'm not touching the engine! Of course what ever you attempt will always have obstacles, such as rusty bolts or peices which would fit back together. That's part of the fun and makes it more rewarding when completed I guess.
Refurbing alloys is actually really easy just quite time consuming, when I did my first set on my 182 I had to use my car daily for work. So I refurbed 1 wheel at a time whilst using my spare wheel to get to work.

There are loads of YouTube videos as guides but basically a good refurb is all in the preparation. it involves a lot of wet sanding and using filler to fill any curb marks. Then primer, paint then laquer. I would practice using rattle cans though as its so easy to make the paint run and apply to much.

Keep it up and keep learning. When I joined CS I couldn't do a thing mechanically. Now I near enough do everything myself.

Be careful, be logical about it, and take your time and you'll not go far wrong. Clio's are a great car to "learn" on.

That doesn't sound to difficult. I have an old set of wheels at home in a bad condition, so may use those to practice on first. I suspect I'll encounter a lot of problems, but i'm going to research thoroughly what the consequences can be so the car should hopefully still be driveable for my commute to work.

Thanks Chip. I love it. Almost owned it a year and I still have a smile on my face when driving it. I will hopefully track it one day, although I've only been on a track once, and I nearly stuck a Ferrari into the gravel :eek:

I've now purchased a new fog light, so hopefully that'll be replaced soon :)

After giving the car a clean at the weekend, a stupid van driver drove quickly through a flood opposite me on Monday, and has got mud over half the car now, so will have to resort to cleaning it again :dapprove:

Not quite sure on future plans, but open to sensible suggestions if anyone has any :)

Well during the week I managed to get my hands on a brake pedal switch and a used fog light to replace my cracked one. I managed to change the brake pedal switch nice and easily, though may need to adjust it a few clicks.

For the fog light, I was hoping to remove the wheel, and undo the inner arch liner in order to get to the fog light. Unfortunately this plan failed when I noticed that I didn't have a tool to undo the lock wheel nuts :( I went down to Renault to see if they had a tool I could get, but their parts department are only open weekdays. Pain in the arse, but I probably should have checked for the wheel nut tool before I started.

Job for tomorrow is to clean it. Despite cleaning it last week, it now looks a tip after a considerate van driver went steaming through a puddle and drenched my car with mud. Have seen a few cliosports around recently so don't want someone putting a spotted thread up with my car covered in mud :)

Not much of an update, but small progress nonetheless :)
