when youve painted a car and its baked off in the booth, it comes out and its wet flatted with P1500 or P2000 wetordry paper.
you wet flat out all the bits of crap, runs, orange peel, etc. most bosyshops just wetflat all thats been painted.
when its wetflatted the laquer goes dull and to bring it back shiny again you need to cut it with a compound paste (Farecla G3) you use it on an electric mop and it cuts the laquer and brings back the shine.
Ah right, so would you say that it's worth it on a DIY spray job?
I've still to lacquer, but I have very little wetsanding to do as the finish is acceptable for what I want. I'd imagine the finish is going to be smooth after several coats of lacquer, so is it a bit of a pointless step?
you mean using compound on basecoat? you only use it on laquer or high solid paints.
but definatly on diy sprays g3 is pretty much essential. im currently spraying a pretty big spoiler with aerosol paint and aerosol laquer. i aint too worried about the finish with laquer aslong as its covered and the colours right on the basecoat as i know i can wetflat it all well and polish it back up with g3 to a mint finish.
Nah, I meant on the lacquer but just trying to make sense of where it fits in.
I think I get it, you just pile on the lacquer but don't worry too much about alternating thickness as the g3 smooths it all back and polishes it up...?

G3 is pretty useless if you aint wetflatting your laquer, only really good for getting minor scratches and scuffs off etc.
what you painting? as if its a big thing like spoiler/bumper then G3 by hand can take a fair while. an electric polisher is pretty much needed for most things.
stuff like door handles/side strips you can do it by hand though
so as you said above there you could use the g3 for takin out paint scratches... swirl marks? as i dont have and cant afford a pc and the millions of compuonds to use with it
yea g3 takes out swirl marks, but finish with either G10 or some other polish as G3 gets rid of the scratches but aint a finishing polish. for best finishes an electric polisher is needed really.
you'll struggle to get a perfect finish by hand
After applyng the lacquer, how long before using the compound? Should it cure first, or just be generally dry. I'm guessing it's got to cure completely first, as you would with any other polish.
basic test is to just press your finger hard into an area that you cant see, if it leaves a fingerprint then it aint dry yet. should be dry in like a day or so without heat.
