Confirmation of Correct HU Wiring

I'm just after confirmation that my headunit is correctly wired up.

The radio doesn't turn on with the ignition, I have to do it manually.

The radio doesn't turn off with the ignition.

The radio stores its preset stations and settings etc though.

Also, I don't know if it's releated but my sun visor mirror lights don't work either?

Fuse is blown. F7 iirc, middle top with the radio icon on it. That one feeds the radio and the interior light amongst other things.

Doesn't this fuse feed the heated rear windows too? If so, they work.

As long as my wiring at the back is OK then that's cool.

Where's the best place to pick up a fuse?

Does it though? Or does the light just come on the dash? Does the relay click?

Anyway, its the only common thing so i'd check its blown. Can get fuses from halfrauds or a local factors etc, shouldn't cost more than a few pence.

But check first to confirm its blown and to get the correct rating.

all you need to do is pull the red and yellow wires out and swap them over,

You don't, thats the standard headunit.

Theres also F29 to check as well, that feeds the radio too. But certainly sounds like its not getting an ignition feed.

Would say F7 though because that feeds the courtesy mirror lights as well.

Haven't heard that one before (not saying your wrong), has it always done it? Or only started recently?

But seeing as the mirror lights don't work i'm still going on fuse.

the change year was 2000 iirc , so putting a pre 2000 head unit into a later one and they need to be swaped or viceverca , happened on my old one

Interesting, thanks for the replies. The reason I posted pictures is to confirm that is the standard setup for the wiring configuration.

Are all the fuses rated the same? I could switch one over from another socket to test?


It's done it since I picked the car up last week. My mates got a 172 and his CD player turns on with ignition.

How do I check what year / model my standard CD player is?

Forget about the differences in headunit until you've checked the fuses. Yes they're all rated differently as different fuses blow at different currents.

Just look in the passenger compartment fuse box and you'll be able to see if the fuse is blown by just looking at it.

I would check it but I'm trying to establish whats right and whats wrong as I've only had the car 8 days!

I noticed something else thats a bit weird last night too. Basically I picked someone up and 20 mins after picking him up the radio beeped and turned off!!

Sorry, I'm just a bit of a perfectionist and I want things how they should be. I've got time tonight to go and test things and I'm going through it with a fellow 172 owner (Pee from here).

it will turn off because it doesnt think the car is running, all of them do it when its just on the ignition, like when your washing your car or something

The car was running though? I literally pulled up, he jumped in and off we went.

Yes but because the fuse is blown its not getting an ignition feed and thinks you've left the radio on with the car off so turns itself off so it doesn't flatten your battery.

Same reason why it doesn't come on and off with the car, check the fuse already! :rasp:

Fuse checked at a mates.

Had a yellow 5 fuse in there that had blown, reason being it should of been a blue 15!!

So, off to the motor factors tomorrow as I didn't want to nab my mates fuse. Tested the sun visor lights and turning the ignition on and the radio works.

I'm so chuffed it was a cheap fix! Cheers for all the help

Next on the list - Return to the garage I bought it from to get them to replace the car battery as the trip is resetting itself.

It's been slow, but I'm a mechanical novice and been incredibly busy not seeing any daylight to work in, but I got there!

Everything is complex when you come from a bobby basic car to something with all these toys and gadgets.
