Converting AVI to DVD

I'm after some advice please peeps.

What is the best software available (preferably free) to convert an AVI video file to a DVD file so I can burn it onto DVD and play in my DVD player as it's quite old and only plays DVDs and VCDs.

This works a treat. http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html Create an ISO and burn with ImgBurn.

I use DVD Santa, it takes ages to encode a movie, but it's free and it works fine.
