  Clio 172 cup + 325ci
meeting up with a couple of mates tomorrow for a blast..2 mini coopers one an normal S with pulleys and a few other bits running around 200bhp and the other a standard JCW...How far behind and i likely to be lol

Not expecting to be quiker obviously but hoping the little cup will do me proud :) Im standard by the way

my 182 runs 182.8 hp, according to my latest rolling road, and it will out do my mates normal s. the JCW could be different though.....

My old 182 felt marginally quicker than my standard S does to about 60/70, above that I'd say the S is faster. In a straight line I'd expect a JCW to pull on a 1*2.

Who really cares though? Both great cars, just enjoy it!

Where are you expecting to have this meet/race etc. A local marshalled track i presume?

Supercharged or Turbo btw?

Once rolling a standard R56 JCW should easily pull on a 1*2.

  RB 182 Cup
I owned an R53 JCW before my 182. I don't think any of the JCWs made their quoted 210bhp.

I would say it will be a close run thing.

Whilst the Mini is a nicer place to sit IMHO, I find the Clio more involving and more fun to drive.

The supercharger sound and the pops and bangs on overrun on the Mini were wonderful.

U would beat the standard S but the JCW will have the edge up the top end the 0-60 times are very close with the cup and JCW

Well guys just back from a blast with the two coopers and im glad to report that there was hardly anything in it at all between the 3 cars.I found it handy enough to keep with them to be honest from standing starts and rolling up to about 125mph(On a private track of course)

The JCW has a decat and larger front mount but has yet to be mapped so i suspect it will be a good bit quicker when mapped.

The other Cooper is a the supercharged version with a good few bits done but also not mapped but in and arount 200bhp seeing that it kept with the JCW.

So im delighted with my little banger seeing as its bog standard and the other two were modded and more powerful.

The sound off both of them was amazing.

Ill get pics up of the 3 of them later :)

I hated my supercharged one.

Never owned a supercharged but my mate hated that I had a Cup that was a good bit quicker than his Mini. The R56 doesn't feel very quick but picks up pace very easily. The Cup needed to be hammered which was fun.

R56 is deceptive at how it gains speed, especially riding the torque. Horses for courses I loved my 182 but love the R56 aswell.

I've always thought the R53 needs to be modded to get any enjoyment from it.

I had a go with my mates Cooper S (Standard) out of the traps & I pulled away pretty convincingly. He was two up but I had a full tank of jungle juice he was on 1/4.

Even enough test.

Agree with the above tho, mod one & it'll be gone.

In the 200? I'd guess the JCW would be a different story, the S isn't all that rapid but a marked improvement in pace over the supercharged car.

Yeah, the power delivery on the Mini is quite subtle compared with the Cup. I loved the Cup but I couldn't have a Clio over the Mini now. I can't really fault the Mini... (famous last words).

Haha. You don't need to, they give themselves enough faults ;)

Ive an autocar mag from 2002 that i got off a mate the other day..Has the clio cup v cooper s when they both came out..

Il give you a couple of quotes :)

''The clio is-and im not exaggerating when i say this-miles faster than the mini''

50-70mph times were recorded at 13.3secs Mini and 7.9secs Cup..Thats some difference so its no surprise i was able to keep up with the JCW and the other modded S.Were talking from standing starts to up over 125mph.

So id imagine a Cup with the mods mentioned above and a set of cams running around 190-195bhp would give a de-cated,mapped JCW a good run.

Dont forget the mini is near 1150kg and the Cup is only 970kg? Thats nearly 200kg difference :)

Hi mate, yeah I was in the 200, which had about 1k miles on it at the time.

I always had an issue with the long gearing and shocking fuel consumption for the performance on my R53:

My mates Got the same problem with the shocking fuel consumption, is their any reason why their so bad? And is their anything that can be done to help improve fuel consumption?

You do realise that an R56 JCW with an exhaust/de-cat and a map would be around 240bhp with a similar torque figure?

The old supercharged ones are abit wet when standard, but I don't for one second believe that from 50-70 miles an hour a Cup can do it 5 SECONDS faster.

Sell it and get something else. Its just one of those engines that uses alot of fuel, either live with it or get shot. My 306 gti-6 was the same, drank petrol, I think the Clio's are just suprisingly cheap too run for what they are because, they are light only 1100kg I believe, and the engine isn't exactly stressed, 172hp from a 2 litre. A friend has a ep3 type r, and that is also bad on fuel, being heavier and 197hp, but he still likes it. These are hot hatches if fuel economy is a big deal get a diesel or something IMO

  Flame 172 (Ph2)
Fuel consumption in our Clios is nothing short of fantastic for the performance they deliver.

In my eyes, a 2 litre putting out 140 / 150 bhp is unstressed, 170/180 bhp is well tuned and anything around and above 200bhp is highly tuned.

So despite the power our cars put out, and we can still achieve 28/30 mpg around town is nothing but remarkable. Many 1.4 engines with less than half the power will do the same (sensible driving in both cases)!

Oh I See so thats just the way they are, fair enough. He's all ways complaining about the bad mpg that's why I say to him to get a clio ;)

The Supercharged S was probably on par with the Fiesta ST, maybe a touch quicker. I remember my Cup being quicker than the old S and that's the Mini they were comparing it to. I also don't believe these times from 50-70mph. I'd say the Cup would be quicker but not that much.

According to Evo 172 Cups are 1010kg.

They were 1090kg, certainly not under 1000kg anyways. So only about 60kg's.

Totally agree, the 172 was great on fuel for the performance. The 197 & 200 however are terrible.

The Supercharged Mini was terrible on fuel but the Turbocharged is very good.
