Cost of getting belts done

  RB 182 cup,astra sri
I got a price from a renault specialist in glasgow of £430 + vat. That includes the timing belt, aux belt, water pump and oil and filter change.

Does this sound reasonable?

Before anyone says; i am taking the conscious decision not to get the dephaser done since its an extra 150 quid. the car has only done 41k and i am willing to take the risk.

cheers

yeah that's just an aux belt at that price, needs a full aux kit really

So you think thats just to replace the aux belt and not the tensioner kit? Whats the issue with not getting the tensioner kit? I thought that price was about right. by the time you add vat onto it its 500!

tensioners are getting to be pretty much seized every time i take one off now. most aux failures are down to the lowe idler breaking up

My normal price is £436 for both kits. Add a water pump (£69 iirc) and then an oil and filter change (at least £50?) and you're past £550

So you think its not worth changing the water pump but making sure you do the tensioner on the aux belt.

Did he do yours? I will give him a phone. As long as i get someone who knows how to do the job properly and is a reasonable price. Is there many other folk on here that have used him?

Got a price from kenny brown motor engineers in Hillington of £280 for the labour. He said he could get the parts or i could but would only use genuine renault parts. Where is the cheapest place for me to get the kits that i need?

I seen K-tec have the cam belt kit for 152 and the aux belt kit for 135. Is there anywhere i can get genuine kits cheaper?

I was under the impression the pullys are more likely to fail than the belt.

Really? I'm interested to know if you've ever seen one fail. The guys that did mine said it was a waste of money, so I just went for the Aux belt.

Chris

Wouldn't Want to use that guy again. As said the kit fails and if the aux goes can take the cam belt with it

Had my aux belt changed at 36k, and recently the idler bearings have gone. For an extra £100 for the idlers/tensioners it's not much. The last thing you want is an aux fail and sever consequences that could potentially follow.

Right so got a confirmed price from kenneth brown engineering for the job. its going to be 510 plus vat for doing the cam belt and aux belt with tensioner (genuine renault parts). its a lot of money but i guess i have no choice really. it needs to get done. i am going to leave the water pump and dephaser.

I recently paid a tad over £700 for:

72k service (replacing basically everything)
Full cambelt/aux belt change
New front pads.

The price you are paying is about right.
