Couple of Questions for V6 owners!

Hi , perhaps a few V6 owners out there (the 255) could answer a few questions for me? I’ve currently running a VX220 as my only car – commute in it every day 25 miles or so. Had it for a year and a bit now and although it’s a fantastic car it doesn’t really suit my needs anymore. I’ve always fancied a V6 & it seems to be just that bit more practical than a VX. My questions are:
· Does it ground out over speed bumps i.e. is it any lower than the VX?

· Can the space over the engine be used to carry luggage?

· Is the air conditioning decent? (too many hours roasting in the VX gridlocked in London traffic - must be getting old…)

· Is the ride likely to be less spine breaking than the VX?

· Any other problems using this as the everyday car?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

I use mine as an everyday car - also considered a VX after testing one at Bedford Autodrome - loved the car but couldnt live with it every day.

The Vee is actually quite practical. You can get lots of luggage on the shelf behind the seats (we get a couple of small cases and 2 crash helmets on there no problem). You can also use the space above the engine as long as the luggage can stand getting a bit warm.

The chassis is pretty stiff, but overall the ride is a lot better than comparable stuff like Evos etc. The air-con works fine, and its not so loud that you cant listen to the stereo.

Overall I dont have any real problems. Had mine since October last year and very happy.
Oh, speed bumps. You have to be careful, but Ive yet to come across one that I couldnt negotiate with a little care. Have to look out for kerbs with the front airdam though.

Thanks for the info, its sounding increasingly like the car I need (and I havent even heard it yet!). Seems like more of an all rounder than the VX, which is exactly what I need (never mind the fact that it looks fantastic!). Im off to have an exploratory look at one in a local dealer at the w/end

Cheers

Have had mine 2.5 years. used every day and have covered in the order of 58k in that time.

have covered the most in one day about 650 miles with no trouble.

Leave home on Monday return Friday, all my gear and cloths etc.
A.C. o.k. and keeps me in comfort.

Had Elise before and the V6 is more practical and comfortable.

Speaking as a Mk1 onwer (but Im sure the same applies to the Mk2):

· Does it ground out over speed bumps i.e. is it any lower than the VX?

Only VERY high ones and usually overcome by putting 1 wheel on the bump, and aiming the other to the side of it.

· Can the space over the engine be used to carry luggage?

Ive had 2 tyres on there, and now and again a load of shopping, though just beware that the surface is shiny plastic, so things will slide about a bit!

· Is the air conditioning decent? (too many hours roasting in the VX gridlocked in London traffic - must be getting old…)

My air-con has been permanently switched on for the last month or so. The main issue I have with it is that it works too well (i.e. can get very cold inside!), and it forces the engine fan on when you slow down so can be a little noisy!

· Is the ride likely to be less spine breaking than the VX?

The ride is surprisingly civilised for such a car. Never been in a VX, but have driven a few Elises and the Vees setup is much more comfortable!

· Any other problems using this as the everyday car?

None whatsoever as long as you dont carry too much luggage, though even then the front passenger seat & load bay under the bonnet will handle a reasonable amount between them!

I do about 30,000 miles a year, and mine spends most of its life on the motorway doing at least 1 long journey each month (i.e. over 400 mile round trip). 6th gear is pretty refined & quiet, and Im averaging about 28mpg which might come as a shock to a VX/Elise owner with your 40-50mpg figures, but is no worse than running a cosworth!

The only things which annoy me (spending quite so much time in the car) are the occasional rattle & squeak (probably not so bad in a newer 255 model) and the pretty poor turning circle which can be a pain in tight car parks.

Little to add beyond what the guys above have already said. Ive found it suprisingingly practical and have even taken it to IKEA a couple of times and squeezed a suprising amount of stuff in with a little bit of planning.

I use mine every day too ... and cant imagine wanting to drive anything else for a long time to come.

Thanks guys, this has been really helpful. There seem to be a lot of very happy V6 owners out there, hopefully Ill be one of them in a couple of months time!

Cheers

You better believe it Alan...................you wont regret it.................the Vee is a car EVERYONE should own once in thier life..................I just happen to have got mine when Im YOUNGER than most eh :D

One thing that hasnt been mentioned which some of the more RETIRING of Vee owners find off putting is the CONSTANT attention the Vee attracts ALL the time...............ITS GRRRRREAT :D....................all of the attention I get is of the admiring type NEVER had any probs with chavs, wide boys, boy racers etc.

No ones mentioned the space in the actual boot that Andy showed us a picture of.

Whats the servicing costs and intervals like chaps?

Gilbert as far as servicing goes my car has just had its 4th service.............2 x 12,000 & 2 x 24,000mile services the costs were as follows: -

£134 - £144 - £124 - £320 this one included brake fluid, coolant and gearbox oil all changed and stripping the rear brakes (sticking callipers) and checking the front suspension for a "creek".

As for the front storage area.............never used it for anything other than a sports bag..........but it seems plenty big enough for me.

Cya Stu

PS my car has been serviced every 12months since new although the service interval is 12,000miles or 2years.........my car has now covered 25,000miles.
