CPU Virtualization overhead when not being used?

I haven't looked into this much, if at all really. But when Virtualization is enabled within BIOS, does that place a performance overhead on the CPU itself?

Just enabled it on a PC here running Windows 7 Pro for the XP Compat mode. I 'think' my PC at home has Virtualization turned on, though I definitely don't need it. Just wondered if its doing extra work that it doesn't need to be doing?
