Cruise Control (fuel economy and near misses!)

Hi all,
A friend of mine who has a bmw swears that he gets worse fuel economy when he used his cruise control? Would this be true?

Also, has anyone had any near misses with CC? This is my first car with it and I tend not to use it incase I realax too much and crash!? Am I being daft.....?

Cruise Control is much worse for fuel consumption. Yep.

Never noticed tbh. Can't see how it could be detrimental to mpg unless your using too high a gear for the speed your doing.

Never had any near misses..... but I can see how they could come about - some people seem to think that switching it on means they can swith off - Not so!!
