Crunch Time for Clio

Tomorrow morning im taking my car to get re built, well thats what it seems like,
its a 51 1.4 16v dynam +. its done 72K,
for about a year i have been buying coils and spending money on getting my ECU checked out by monkeys who dont know what an engine is.

so i took my car to Dave Clark renault and pug specialist in lincoln. he plugged it in and said. "hmmmmm"

the main problem with the car is the throttle keeps turning off, so he says that a new throttle is something like £300+ so hes going to change the wiring loom instead. 2ndly there is a temperature sensor that had melted or something, 3rdly theres a problem with the mapping, he was unclear as to what exactly he ment, but said if he cleared it, it would prolly go away. 4thly did i know there was a water leak. i did. so hes going to change the pump as all the hoses are fine.
although this worries me as the head was ruined by the guy who serviced it and wrecked the exhaust valves when changing the cam belt. hopfully the head isnt leaking water!!!!

with the MOT just around the corner, 4 new tyres needed, im thinking this is crunch time for the clio, maybe its time to get rid!!!!!

oh the guy quoted mr £155 for the wiring loom and sensors and labour, which i didnt think was too bad.

any thoughts?

i doubt its worth much, i dont want another clio unless its a RS!

My '96 Clio 1.2 is still going, after 180,000 miles...

...so if you want a cheap runner - spend the money on it, and keep it running for another few years IMO.

hmm.. the modern engines are usually good upto 120,000 if looked after. a small diesel engine is around 150,000.

our cleaners BMW 520i (2.2 i think) has 200,000 + miles on the clock is a 1997 model 4th hand and is only now starting to need some work done to it which is pricey bought for £5k with 150,000 on th clock but then again its a beemer.

if you look after the engine a modern clio should last long enough to warent the initial purchase cost, i bought my cup with 11.8k miles on yet paid a fraction of the list price if it does me to 50,000 (usual cup driving lol) id be happy but it would with proper car manage 100,000 i expect before rebuild due to the constant Rev`s and power it deals with

.. edit that, ive just asked her its got 280,000 on the clock and still going ! eek BMW engines must be pretty solid

my 2002 1.2 16V engine is at 120,000 miles and starts just as quick and sounds pretty much identical to my mums 8,000 mile 05 1.2 16V extreme only thing thats been replaced was a new clutch

my July 2001 mk2 phs2 1.2 16V is on 83K, and has been THRASHED

Sounds a good price.
You could have bought an extended Renault warently you know to ocver you for this mine cost me £600 for a dci for another 2 yrs and an extension till 90k. Its not cheap but it covers all that stuff.
Sounds a good price though if that fixes it.
My 52 plate dci on 52k and its fine and its had a hard life and its no problem (bit slow though).
Deciding when to swop a car which does high milage is difficult as you never know if you should run it to the ground and save up for a new car or buy a new one and take a measly payout trade in.

on the warrenty, when it ran out a had to change all 4 coils, then some company rang up offering extended warrenty, so i asked if theyd be paying for all the parts i had to change whilst they were decideding wheather to ring me or not, they said no, and so did I.


Got the car back it seems ok, and i dont look after then car so i guess things are bound to go wrong, its been ok so far, the closest i got to throwing it off the road was when the damper failed/burst, on a round about. i did a thirsty 18mpg on the way home + didnt cost a penny as its going back to get 2 new tyres fitted for £5.50 each, which sounds a bit too good to be true!


the guy said he found a wiring fault with the temp sensor so mended tha instead of replacing the sensor, seems like a decent place to be honest, ill wait till my final bill !!!
