CV Boot

  Golf MK6 GT TDI
supposed to be picking my car up from the garage, but they found a split boot, apparently you have to change the whole driveshaft as it comes as one unit!
not sure if theres any truth in it, garage is paying so i dont mind!

Thought that was only the case if it was the inner boot that had split?

Outter CV boots are about £12 from Renault if I've remembered correctly.

that probably is the case, i haven't actually bought the car yet! they're having to fix that for the MOT before they can sell it to me!

don't listen to me, still a noob!

I only need the boot/gaiter as it split when I caught it on the bottom arm bolt so I know it aint leaked and worn the bearings/shaft.
If its split and then been driven till its dry the drive shaft will seize, then it will all need replacing.

look under your car! you can see if the boots split, and in most cases it will spray the CV greese everywhere in the wheel arch etc, which smells like liquid death!!! the inner one will be the one thats not right behind the wheel hub

my outer boot let go and sprayed crap all round the inside of the wheel. the actual boot was ok, just the clip had let it come loose. clip off, filled with grease and cabletied on sorted it out.

For anyone that wants to know, the parts I linked to in the original post are just universal boots. The dedicated part isnt on the website so you need to phone them up, although its a bit more expensive. Ive just gone for the universal one, meh.
