"CV joint on its way out...."

I'm looking to buy another 172 and one that I have lined up to see is described as having a CV joint that will need replacing soon.

How do you diagnose that the CV joint is worn?

I've never had one fail or wear out on a clio, but my passat is about to s**t a CV joint and I know this because it clicks like mad on full lock.

They're essentially the same on most cars so I can only assume this will be the same symptoms.
 
What sort of price would I be looking at for a new CV joint fitted? From what I can gather it's on it's way out because the boots have perished. So price for 2 new boots and a new CV joint, is it going to start getting expensive?
