Cylinder numbering

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
did a quick search, but couldn't find anything...

I've gone to connect my ht leads on the 172 engine but need to know what cylinder numbers are which :D

the mk1 16v is cambelt 4 and gearbox 1, but I hear the 172 is cambelt 1 and gearbox 4?

which is the right numbering?

i think you guys have it around the wrong way, it says on the coil, the numbers (down where the bolts are that hold it on).

this confused the arse out of me today aswell, french tend to call the 'front' of the engine as we know it number 4, meaning starting at the front (belt end) is number 4

I've connected it up with number 1 lead (and number 1 coil) at the gearbox end

worst way is it wont start and you'l get a bang
if that happens swap em round,, but start on the assumtion that gearbox side is number one and you wont have to change them

yep i changed my cup leads, and mine go the other way

Cabin
(coilpack)
3 4
2 1

Cambelt end 1 2 3 4 Gearbox end

yeah, humm, maybe its that beer i had, i'll shine a torch on it in the mornign and tug some leads and see whats what.

depends how you number the coil end as well. ie which one on the coil pack do you say is number 1, and which one is 4 ?
mine is like this
Cabin
(coilpack)
3 4
2 1

Cambelt end 1 2 3 4 Gearbox end

But you could have it like this, and it would be connected in the same firing order

Cabin
(coilpack)
2 1
3 4

Cambelt end 4 3 2 1 Gearbox end

someones got it sussed!! ^^^^^

for the record, flyhweel end IS no.1.

Dont see how you can confuse this with 1342 tho lol

right

my coilpack is:

3 4
2 1

and i've connected it up like this:

cambelt 4 3 2 1 gearbox

take it some coil packs are numbered differently?

the coils fire in banks (2 of them), so 3 and 2 can be reversed, same with 4 and 1, as these cyls rise and fall together.

bumping this....

so which is the correct way?

Cabin
(coilpack)
3 4
2 1

Cambelt end 4 3 2 1 Gearbox end

Me bending over engine

i currently have it like that and my ph1 isnt firing =/

Cabin

Lead numbers 4 3 2 1

Firiring order 1 3 4 2

You standing over engine

So basically you want the longest lead number 1 over on the gearbox end]
