Dash lights turning themselves off....

Lads, this has happened me just twice in the last year but it's still strange. So just driving along with my lights on and all of a sudden all my dash lights turn off all by themselves. Only things that are working are my trip computer lcd and the light for my dipped beams left on. Even my radio lights etc are all off. Turning my lights on an off doesn't turn them back on, only stopping the car, turning it off, turning the lights off and then starting the car again.

I found one other thread about this but no clues to an answer. I'm sure the fuse isn't loose and it isn't blown.
