Deaded my car good and proper now

Just been out for a drive....

On way back home i booted it, changed to 3rd and something happened, like a bad bad crunch / crack / snap.

Recently there has been a problem with it jumping out of 3rd gear.

Anyway, got home and it turns out when stationary i can put it in 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th and it will stall... but when i put it in 3rd and release the clutch nothing... so 3rd is buggered..

its the box is it? .. whats the crack with the scraping sound though?!.. looked under car but its far too dark to see.. doesnt seem like anything is hanging off..

new box for me i guess eh?

^^ was going to say gearboxes go for around £300 and a new clutch from the top jobbies are around £300 aswell!!

I take it the cars fine just won't go in third then?

If so check your engine mounts possible ones just broken the battery one if I were to guess.

Well edde its wierd.. it sounds VERY unwell when driving.. exactly like the exhaust is hanging off and scraping along the road!... (yes im a lazy sod and not been out yet to look - very hung over!)... i'll up date after ive had a shower and got my stuff together

FRED: have you?.. might be interested in that.. whats it going for?. As your aware i will need a new engine soon so prob just giong to get a engine / box combi from a scrappy then when she is perfect sell on...

A 172 CUP box has a speedo drive hole in the casing ( digital impulse sensor ) the box code is JC5 129

A 172 does not have a speedo drive in the casing - the speedometer is powered by the ABS system ( ABS sensor on the hub detects the revolutions of the ABS ring on the drive shaft ) the code is still a JC5 129

Make sure you get a JC5 129 with a speedo drive - otherwise your speedometer wont work

Thanks Matt i didnt know that!... So it would be no use going to a breakers and using their FF 172 engine/box as my speedo wouldnt work?.

Damn, that really makes my search harder.. Do any of the 182's have JC5s with speedo drive holes? or is it ONLY the 172 cup?

k cheers so 172 and 182 cup only...

just been outside.. all "looks" fine underneath etc... when its started, out of gear, foot on clutch sounds fine.. when i release the clutch it sounds terrible!... 3rd wont work at all... all other gears work and seem to drive the car ok just with a bad bad noise!..

Buy Fred's box and get a 172 182 engine seperate so your not restricted for gearbox compatibility!
