Decat question

  Black 182 FF
I'm looking into getting a decat for my 182 for several reasons. Firstly as my cat seems to have a bit of a rattle at 4k which is gradually getting worse, also as I'm thinking of getting the car mapped and people tend to mention on here it's only worth it if you have inlets/exhaust(have)/decat done. I can also swap it myself come MOT time no problem and wouldn't mind it being a bit louder as with the 192 system on it's a bit too quiet at the moment (though I dont want it too loud). I realise there's no real gains to be had, but getting rid of the rattle would do me.

What I'm wondering though is where you stand with insurance and the law in general. I currently have mine insured on a modified policy (I guess I should ask them too and I will before I go ahead with it) which IIRC gives me a BHP limit which I'm not really likely to get close to.

So basically is there anything to it other than noise? and how would I stand with regards insurance and the law?

Well it won't pass emissions test so it is classed as illegal, but most who fit them get little trouble. You should notice the car revs a bit more freely and possibly more torque.

Only a couple insurers allow decats but i would guess 80-90% of people dont declare and just switch over for mot time

Ive got one for sale now in the for sale section ;)

the 182's cat design is essentially a sports cat so the gains are not massive, just noisier mate.

Different car completely but on a Cav Sri 16v I had a few years ago I noticed a bit more pull low range, revved more freely and a lot more noise. I dont expect anything much I just think for the price it might be a good idea all things considered.

Stick with a 182 cat imo.

Probably have to replace mine though as tbqh I'm sick of the rattle. It's just got through an MOT, but it annoys me. Cheapest I've seen is £100+ delivery on eBay and I've no idea how good/bad they are. Can't be bothered with a second hand cat.

Yeah I looked into it ages ago and decided against it for more or less that reason. Now though it just seems to make more sense.

I have the same exhaust with a decat. It's still quieter than a yozza with a cat. Gains are obviously minimal but I noticed better throttle response and slightly better low down poke.

lol asking for a pic, its a straight bit of pipe man!

Yeah but I want a one to fit on a standard system or my 192 Scorpion system - bolt on, bolt off as I haven't got the ability or equipment to chop and weld! So that would also cost me money.

There's Scorpion ones on eBay that look the correct fit for £64 delivered, so I think I'll probably go with one of those tbh.

is it defo thre cat thats rattling?

Would be worth checking the heat shield and the springs on the joint.

If it is the cat you can often cure a rattle by denting the shell

Declare on you insurance as a full exhaust system. Manifold back..
If you get pulled then say you have declared it .
That's what James and jms tuning said lol

Joint/springs etc have been changed within the last year, all areas of the heat shield checked too. The exhaust is blowing again from the manifold to cat joint - I've got a powerflex dog bone on order and the fitting kit too.

Sky insurance on here let me declare mine as a decat and ss exhaust system. "touch wood" never had any trouble with it if I have ever get pulled I turn the car off straight away soo it doesn't stink. To be fair I think it's VOSA you need to be more worried if the pull you over, as they have all the equipment to check emmisions and what not. Also if you do get pulled it would more than likely just have to have a retest as cats can break at any point.

Ive got the scorpion RS192 system WITH decat, whoever says it's too loud either hasn't got this system or is a granny. It's only slightly loud when your gunning it, at motorway speeds if you feather the throttle you can barely hear the exhaust at all! This is more down to the RS192 system being quiet, I was behind a yozza'd 182 recently and trust me that is sheer RACKET compared to mine! Had trouble with the emissions light, blanked the lambda hole and put the sensor up in the heatshield and that sorted it for about an hour, it came back on and then a couple days later went off and has stayed off since. If you can change the cat yourself then don't tell the insurance and if you have a crash get the car recovered yourself and put cat back on before insurance comes to inspect. Traffic cops carry the emissions testers also.

My RS 192 with decat is a little boomy at motorway speeds, but not too irritating that I can live with it. Just go with the RS192 decat pipe, not very expensive. My EML does come on occassionally but it's easy enough to reset the fault codes and get rid of it.
