So im going to start work on my clio soon, but want to keep everything legit so was wondering how much detail people go into when declaring modifications to insurers?

And does wording it sensibly help to decrease costs e.g Uprated Gaz coilovers, rather than just lowered

How do insurers determine how much to add to the premium based on mods?

Thanks guys

directline are aweful for modified cars

your best bet if your are heavily modifying is to go with a specialist like greenlight, brentache, flux etc

they know their cars and are generally more reasonable for mods for example some will have a price band for the power so it might be £200 more for adding unlimited mods up to 20bhp

My insurance is a lot cheaper now than when the car was standard.
The only problem was that because it's caged most companies wouldn't quote for it.

Ring um up and ask mate. They won't see coilovers/springs differently to lowered. Personally wouldn't declare cd player/ spraying diamonds/ wind deflectors but you should with engine mods, suspension, alloys etc

declared everything down to the clio diesel track rod ends, always better to be delcared than be stopped by the police and s**t your pants

Currently got a mk2ph2 and its on directline cos its on my mums insurers. but im thinkin of switchin to a 1.6 and going on my own insurance.
Only with directline because the rest of the family is so you get discounts

thats exactly my thoughts i want to keep everything legal! im plannin on keepin mods pretty oem on the 1.6 when i come to get one. Coilovers, colourcoding...very similar to JoeyD's clio (love that)

Bum rape you?

I know someone who didnt declare a v6 conversion in his 205, then proceeded to break down on the motorway, who then proceeded to get ass raped by the police when the pulled over to esee what was happening and relised he wasnt covered for the conversion.

Thats obvious when you pop the hood and see a V6 where a 1.9/1.6 may once have been. Some mods like re-maps ect are hard to detect, and i know of peeps who haven't declared.

As above, best to let them know...

Scenario:
Some Goon takes you out, your car gets trailered back for repairs/inspection, & the garage report a lot of add-on's/cars-far-from-standard etc...

Not good.

Even if its not your fault you get shot for not letting them know, not a good start to a successful claim? Most insurance reps know a thing or two about cars so a few details wont go amiss or be over their heads? ;)

This will not end well.

Simple matter is - If you're not declared, you may as well not have insurance. Simples.

Ive learnt the hard way, trust me ITS NOT WORTH IT.

You should have seen the form i filled out to flux wit mods listed, was crazy, everything down to gauges and aerial.

Going with directline will allow me to get a bigger engined car because of the multi car discounts, but if i cant mod it with them (only 19!) then i dont really know if its worth it, as i want to mod it.......Not up for spending vast amounts on a 1.2

Declare everything in great detail, at the end of the day insurance companies want your money but don't want to payout so they will find an excuse not to. I even told my insurance company my wing mirror covers and all badges were red with stickers on and not the normal titanium colour

TBF, you can be a bit cute as to how you declare mods. Only give them as much information as they ask for, as long as you're confident the description covers you.

My brakes are declared simply as 'brakes - uprated'. There can't be any comeback on that, as that's exactly what they are.

About your car
•Your vehicle is right hand drive
•Your vehicle is not an import
•Your vehicle has not been modified in any way
•Your vehicle has no more than 8 seats
•Your vehicle registration is not a "Q" plate

This is the disclaimer from tesco insurance webstie. I'd suggest you ring and inform them of the fact urs is a rep, otherwise your gonna be screwed when coming to make a claim. Its not like a 172 body kit is hard to spot on a non-sport?

I'd call them and watch your policy go through the roof never mind the excess! I had the cup insured with them till it got silly and they wanted £600 excess cause of the mods so I left!
