I wouldn't trust a £100 server to run anything

Kind of true, but it's not actually £99 - it's just on offer.

It would be fine for some low end stuff.. £99 is quite basic, so add a 3Y warranty and a raid controller and it's not bad.. certainly good enough for a development server, or something none-critical.

I wouldn't trust a £100 server to run anything

its usually £407 they are just getting rid of stock

i got a server teh other day for 450 dell sc 1435 opteron cpu 1gb ram 160gig HD its just used as a intranet server so does the job admirably

today im ordering 2 more but this time they cost £923 as im putting windows 2003 on them same server but double teh cost for an operating system lol these are just going to be used as DC's/dhcp/dns so they dont need to be good as they are disposable

Except once you add vat and delivery its £174, which isnt such a steal....still a good price but not quite £99....

cpu is £37 ex
memory £8
Hd £27
case £25
motherboard £50

so roughly 170+ vat for just the bits them selfs if you use the cheapest bits you can

I've used and installed lots of Dell servers, and they only have occassional issues but generally very stable. I'd certainly recommend them anyway.

The ClioSport server is a HP DL365 though.. so I dunno what that means? I trust HP more for my own stuff? Heh.

blades are great if you already have a san if you dont they arnt much use lol

im trying to get my boss to buy me a hp san or at least datacore so i can make a san my self

after all its only a pc with a bunch of disks

we have lots of customers on blades without san mate, you can get 4 hot plug SAS drives in a blade, or use a storage blade that holds 6 drives or a NAS blade to share storage, lots of options to use blades without SAN!

LOL, a SAN is a bit more than that mate, you couldn't build one yourself, other wise its just a NAS.

SAN uses a fabric, so FC switches and to plug into those you need FC controllers attached to disks and if you want a proper san they will be FC disks too so its FC all the way through.

But then HP have a new SAN coming out and thats going to be a great mid market product!

at the moment i am able to get HP ML105's with 1gb of memory, 160gb hdd, and dual core xeon, all for £100.

There's a reason why it's £99

Dell Servers are gash

amen

Just wondering how many servers you've both worked with?

We bought a few Dell Poweredge 2950 recently and have a whole line of other stuff, also got a load of HP servers here.

Dell are OK for most applications, only thing which lets them down is their firmware...lots of errors in it.

emc sans do you know what OS they run ?? windows

you can build a san easy enough as the controller is just a pc running an os with control software on it (the bit that costs the money)

the bunch of discs i mention would obviously be a drive cage running any drive type you wish there is no point at all going for fc for everything

http://www.datacore.com/ is a great bit of software that allows you to use different types of san or storage solution to present it to the host machine as direct attached the best bit about it is you can use anyones hardware unlike hp or emc

They're going soon though

you sure they run windows, i'm an EMC systems engineer and I must say I have not come across that before.

We are talking Clariion CX3 series aren't we?

Regarding datacore, well if you want a cheap bodge job solution then i guess thats your choice but seriously, thats a lot of good marketing talk, but cannot be compared to buying a proper SAN solution form HP or EMC, they have the sales figures and customers to prove their products.

A SAN is a complex solution and relies on a group of products to produce a dedicated fibre channel network (we aren't talking iSCSI here as unless you have a dedicated 10GB network to use for it its better going FC) and using very intelligent controllers running GB's of cache to make the solution work extremely quickly and reliably.

There are a few manufacturers coming onto the market who seem to think its better to do it other ways and they seem to have some good marketing talk, such as Equalogic who were recently bought by Dell, they rely on SATA discs and iSCSI though and really isn't an enterprise solution but they are very good at selling their solution.

Depeends how much you value your data and want to manage it, but i wouldn't trust anyone with mine except the likes of HP, IBM and EMC for SAN, I really wouldn't

I have a feeling you may be talking about iSCSI NAS though?

  Better than yours. C*nt.

I dislike Dell servers, and I work with far too many of the damned things. Our Citrix farm consists of 25 1855 Blades (the only decent Dells we have), 20 1650s, we've got another 40 1650s performing other tasks and around 10-15 1750s. We've got two EMC/Clariion SANs (one just ditched) with 2850 head units, to go with that we've got 2 6600s, 10 2500s, 4 2600s and 3 2900s, 2 860s IIRC and 2 750s running a web interface. Got a PV220S around somewhere too.

I hate them all, they're much more difficult to work with than the HP stuff I'm used to (and thankfully we're now getting):

35x DL140G3s, dual quad core 1.8s with 4gb memory
1x DL140G3, dual quad and 8gb memory
10x DL360G5 dual quad 2ghz and 4gb memory
HP EVA with 4 shelves, and currently 4x300Gb FC disks in each
6x DL380s dual quad 2.33 and 4gb memory in each.

Much better! As for EMC SANs running Windows etc, that's bull. There's a lot more to SANs than meets the eye, just setting one up shows you that.

And as cheap servers go, you've all just missed a steal - HP were offering free processors and memory a month or two back - dual quad core DL140G3 with 4gb memory and two 80Gb HDDs for £650+VAT delivered... Only one power supply but for none-critical or load-balanced solutions they're perfect.

they still are offering a free processor and double memory this month;)

Also, for anyone after blades they are giving away a free Chassis at the mo when you buy 2 blades and thats worth £6k

be interested to know what you are buying there as there is not such server as a ML105 and thats too cheap for HP, their cheapest is a about £175 at the mo, so its either reconditioned or grey i'm guessing?

*edit am guessing you mean ML115, still cheap at £100, thats cheaper than cost price.

Hmm, temping would make a nice replacement for my exhange server at home (don't ask) got to be better than a P3 733  no it doesn't take that much load .

tbh if i wanted to run an exchange server at home i would just run a vmware machine with server 2003, not worth running a totally separate machine.

I like to play with it , find it quite interested messing about with it. Always been into computers and have a completely non-it job so I still like doing it for the giggle. The server side of things is something I haven't conquered so into it I go, completely over the top for what I use it for but very cool at the same time.

Got given the bits and seemed like the best use I could put them to.
