I know there is 100s of topic on the dephaser pulley and about the rattle it can give off.
I have a couple of questions about these.

Mine is making a noise and has done since i got it, what i want to know is -

A) how long can you drive it before it packs in ?
B) does it pack in and if so is it a new engine ?
C) does the noise get worse ?
D) whats the longest anyone has driven with a noisey dephaser ?

Sounds loud! Mine was a bit louder than that when I got the car though. I just hated the noise when at the lights etc so I got it done @ Birchdown. A specialist will tell you the crack but the Birchdown dude said he'd only ever heard of one completely failing. Guess it would do plenty of damage if it's integrated with the cambelt!

But I've always heard that they don't really fail, just sound proper rough.

ah sorry. The noise definitely gets worse! And as you probs already have noticed it gets louder when up to temp.
I've heard 'stories' on here that guys drive them hard with knackered dephasers and have no issues (apart from noise). I don't think it's terminal or any massive risk driving with a knackered one. But IF it does fail completely I'd assume it's a new engine - same as cambelt failure?
And as for how long - think it's a 'how long's a piece of string' mate! Get the belts done @ Freds and get the catcams! Make you feel better about getting the pulley done! Wish I did when I had my belts changed!

Its only in the last 3/4 months i have really started to notice it and when going through McD's drive thru i can here it echo of the building. I wont be using the car much as i have the Vw Golf.

I plan it going to fred but im wanting a pile of other stuff done also and its costing me £££. Plus its getting the time as i really dont have alot of spare time.

well mines been going for about 45.5k!! of hard driving so im sure ur good 4 a while yet... was just startng when i bought the car but the belts had only been done about 5k previously

minus the de phaser, why not get it done? im guessing money?
yes clearly who ever owned the car before me hadnt had it done.. i didnt really see the point in spending the money getting it all done again as its only a noise.. btw the 45.5k has been done in the past 17months.. hopefully belts will be getting re done within the next few weeks as the engine will be out the car to sort an oil leak

Thread revive.

Just searchin this as mine is fucked.

What is it that actually makes the noise and what wears out for the noise to start ? Is this just renaults version on VVT ?

It's the phase shifter pulley for the inlet camshaft. It's vvt you are correct, the pulley shouldn't have any play in it but they develop play in them which causes a rattling/diesel sounding noise when the engine is warm on idle belowe 1800 rpm.

Part costs about 70 quid I believe but you should do the belts, idlers and tensioner at the same time.
