Dephaser pulley seal leak + no spark

Hi Guys,

Went to fire up my cup racer today after having replacing the cams and the timing belt. And now there oil is pissing out of the dephaser pulley seal, I fitted a brand new seal when i changed the cams and i was careful when fitting the seal and dephaser pulley so as to not damage the new seal. But it seems something is not right, pretty pissed of as its covered the new timing belt and everything oil.

Is it possible to fit the seal the wrong way round?

Also i dont appear to have a spark, i tested againt the block with a spare lead and plug i had and i get nothing. So i checked the datalogger to see if i get an rpm signal when cranking and i get between 150-300 rpm so i dont thing its the TDC sensor. The coil on the car worked fine when i took it off the car 6 months ago and has not been dropped or anything since being in storage. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

Mike

The coil could just be one of those things tbh, the seals could i guess be fitted wrong but if you have fitted new cams and cam belt kit then i guess you are no fool.
The seals should be fitted with the flat face facing to you and the lip facing inwards.

Where did the seals come from, was it in a kit from Renault complete with the cam sprocket bolt/nut and the dephaser pulley blanking plug?

  anything i get
there are 2 different size seals , 1 exhaust 1 inlet . you prob know that but i have seen them fitted wrong way round before , worth checking.
did you put the dephaser bolt cover on ? seen this as well.

Ill get a new coil and try that then for the spark issue. I need a spare anyway so if its not that then its all good.

As for the parts i bought all the parts brandnew from renault. replaced all seals, core plugs, bolts, dephaser bolt cover etc. Im pretty damn sure i fitted the seal with the flat face on the outside as it would be difficult to get the dephaser to go on with the seal the otherway round. I guess ill find out when i strip it back down.

There arent two different size dephaser seals is their? thining i might of been given the wrong part. It has happened to me before with renault parts, part number on the packet is correct but the part inside does not relate to the part number.

the seal that goes on the inlet cams, looks like it's not sealing anything when you fit it, there would be a gap of about 4-5mm all the way round the cam.

Did you fit the seal just under flush from the head face? They can be pushed in to far i think also if the seal was to be fitted the wrong way round the oil pressure will lift the seal lip away from the sprocket instead of pushing it down to make the seal.

But having said all of this i bet the seal has just been dammaged on the lip, i also wipe a little sealant (Loctite 5999) around the outer part of the new seal before fitting this helps fitting it and also makes sure it seals on the outer edge.

I think i drove it in as far as it would go.. Are you not ment to do this? With all other cars and bikes ive owned you allways drive them in to the stop at the back.

No mate, the seals fit just below the chamfer or leading edge which is machined into the head. If they where pushed in to far then they might not pick up on the edge of the sprocket.

I think on the inlet side there are oil holes drilled in the head, if the seal is in to far then these could now be infront of the seal as they should be behind.

no it HAS to sit flush with the casing, you don't "drive it in" either, gentle push with your fingers is all you need

No problem, but if its not that then please lets us know what it was...
