Dephaser..

  Monaco 172
Evening all,

In talks with a guy about a possible purchase of his car and I've asked about the dephaser and he said it's "slightly noisy when warm" but it's got no worse in the 3 years he's owned it. Belts we're done with genuine parts 10k ago.

Is it likely to get worse quickly? Do they get instantly worse? Don't want to fork out for the car and have to do the pulley and belts in the near future. It's a 172 cup by the way.

Cheers. Dave.

If its been rattling for 3 years why didn't he do it when belts were done!!!

I'm not sure mate..

Unsure of what to do to be honest, he wants £1700 for an 88k part history car with a rattly dephaser. And he's pretty firm on the price. May leave it.

If it rattles it will get worse, Mine went from nothing to something in under a year and it was bad.

Offer him a grand or walk away. £1700 will buy you a nice 172 with belts and dephaser done recently.

Thanks mate, confirms what I was thinking.
Just don't seem to be many around that tick all the right boxes and aren't in bloomin Yorkshire or Scotland!! Getting annoying. Haha.

Yup. I just sold a 76k example with brand new belts and dephaser for a shade under £1800.

I know the right car is out there, I
Guess I'm just looking for the best in all of them as I'm getting impatient!!

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Dave.

my dephaser has been 'slightly noisy' for 4 years. hasn't got any worse. I am getting it hanged with the cambelt though. I can see why he might not have done as they are an extra £150 odd

I think prices for 1*2's are insane at the minute. People are just giving them away. Saw a 172 cup with recent belts for £1500 on pistonheads earlier today. Madness.

Minters will always fetch top money though. Look at Steve @ Rsport, DTM cars, Allcars etc. All of them sell their cars for double what the others sell for. Because there are very few nice ones left.
My minter that i'm restoring will be going up for £1000 more than the dearest one I can find at the time! lol

Other than being noisy is there any problem with a rattly dephaser? I cant remember seeing any topics about engines dieing due to the dephaser failing? Only asking because Mick made the comment mine was noisey and needed doing but the belts arent due until next year.

AFAIK they can break up and shove metal into the engine. which is bad.
Mine actually broke and caused a grands worth of repairs.

Cant say I have ever seen any reports of a dephaser imploding. Also keep in mind that when these things are properly noisy, you car will sound like a full on old style diesel taxi.

@Diagro are you talking about big bits of metal of filings? If big bits of metal, please explain how it gets into the engine? As far a I was aware, they only have a oil feed/return from the camshaft?

AFAIK its tiny filings. But anything is bad tbh.

yep thats mine. I have actually just had the dephaser changed and it sounds almost exactly the same. will be taking my old one apart to see how worn it was.

That's peculiar ! Mine has the 'resonating" sounds but no ticking. A short while ago mine was supposably done/renewed when i had my cams put in there and it has developed this resonating noise.
Your new one sounding the same as before is strange but we may share the same observation here , will keep in touch on how this develops !
