Deswirling

  Punto/Clio GTT
bucket of water, some masking tape to tape up plastics.

some polish would be good too, something like G10 or i use autoglym super resin, just something to tickle it afterwards

So basically the two things that I've posted up, some masking tape and some SRP.

I dont have a pc so would it be alright to just put the mop on the end of a drill as it suggests?

Are there any guides to doing this?

Cheers

Drill spins far to fast IMO - you wont find many people recommending it. I have seen it used to address individual scratches and defects but not a whole car in place of a proper machine polisher.

  Punto/Clio GTT
oh i thought you had a mop (rotary)

ive used a couple of those heads before and they am just a backing pad with about an inch of thread sticking out. wouldnt advise using a drill for mopping at all if im honest.

just buy yourself a mop off ebay, you can get them with heads for under £40

Thanks a lot FM, very helpful cheers mate.

So If I buy one of those and some G3 will I be all set? Obviously its not as good as using a pc but can I expect good results from this?

Cheers

rotary is better than a pc IMO

ive never used one but going on what people have said about them and the spec of them its basically a rotary for amateures. it eliminates the risk of burning through the paint on edges considerably as its random orbital.

i can get a finish as good as any pc with my cheapo rotary (granted im experienced with it).

might not be upto richs anal standards ;) x, but theyre A1 finishes

*edit* only thing ill say is watch your edges, because with a rotary it doesnt take much to go through the laquer on wing/bonnet edges. and with how amazingly flush clio panels am :)S) it wouldnt be hard at all to burn through.

apart from that, try not to be scared, just go mop your car, dont be scared ;)

Lol, thats good to hear.

So basically I need to sprinkle some water on my car and put some g3 on the mop, then mop away?

Is that all? Sorry to miather so much mate lol just want to know what I'm doing so I dont make a hash of it lol.

Ta

  Punto/Clio GTT
yup, ide give your car a quick wash first to to get rid of any crap so you dont go spinning grit around your panels.

dont need much G3 if your using water too as it goes a pretty long way. generally i dip my fingertip into my tub and wipe it on then mop away, and keep doing that, dip your hand in your bucket and throw some water on.

im very messy when im mopping usually, good fun lol

  172 & RSi
Lol sounds good. Can you use it on windows too?

Definately going to have to get myself a mop though now, thanks FM :)

  Punto/Clio GTT
yep, just watch your rubber seal as it will burn it, same with any plastics/rubber etc.

headlights are fine though

but to clean windows, best thing you can use is a stanley blade flat. just scrape it over all the window and it leaves a smoother finish than any polish etc that ive tried

Something like my bosch drill had a progressive trigger with a speed and torque setting and a trigger lock so you could technically go anywhere from like 1rpm to 3000rpm, but the drill would be an awkward 'shape' to try and polish a whole car with.
If you are looking to do it cheap, get a speed variable angle grinder with an M-14 attachment (600-3000rpm) and take the guard off, then attach that pad.
Focus will do one for about £25. Again though it takes some skill and if you go mad with it you'll feck up a panel.

If I were you I would look into a Silverline rotary, such as-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Silverline-Ca...ryZ29528QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is cheap enough, and although not up to the same quality as a Makita or Metabo, it does so the job.

As for compouning with the G3, I really dont think it is necessary, and is a bit overkill, especially for Renault paint which is soft. I would highly recomend the Menzerna products, adn it hink for starters you should look into these two products-
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polis...a-intensive-polish-po85rd-3-02-/prod_229.html
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polis...enzerna-final-finish-po-106-fa-/prod_217.html

The two above product should see you right for more or less every job you will entail.

As for pads, there is a large choice, and really is trail and error to which ones work best for you. Take a look at -
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing/cat_2.html

Remeber, you will also need a backing plate-

aceface makes a good recommendation with the Menzerna products.

With the pc I went from first two defect pics [badly swirled] to following three pics [no swirls!] just using the Final Finish polish [mild]

:D

so these rotarys are £40 and just as good as pcing?im confused. Also do they come with a backing plate?and can i just use srp with it?

  106 GTi
A Rotary will produce better results than a PC, just has a learning curve in it's use.

SRP can be used but to correct swirls you will need something more abrassive.

kwl never knew that!Wel im going to order one today. So i need a rotary,a backing plate, few pads, menzerna intesive polish, srp and some tape?

  106 GTi
I would get another finishing polish to use after the I.P aswell just incase it leaves some marring the SRP may struggle with.

donot know were i am going wrong when g3 ing get lef with trales that i can not remove my fatherin law still has them to this day on his car:eek:

cliochris1- I would invest in some Menzerna Final Finish as well as the Intensive Polish, as it will help to remove all the buffer trails and holograms that you may instill on your paint after using the IP. It also gives a great gloss.

delboy172- it is very hard to finsh a polish with any amount of cut down to LSP ready. As i have said above, try using Final Finish.

That is where the art of mastering the rotary becomes hard in trying to finish down to a flawless finish with it. A better choice of polishes and compounds as said will help this.

any thoughts on wot totry ,thanks:eek:

A decent finishing pad and a good finishing polish will help. On the rotary something like a Meguiars Finishing Pad and Menzerna Final Finish. Lots of rotary practice to make perfect, worth reading up on some rotary use threads over on detailing world
