  MKV Golf GTi (240bhp)
Hi, im new to clios and was just wondering if the was a big difference between the 172 and the 172 cup

also is the much of a performance difference between the 172 and 182

Cheers

  ST on the way...
IIRC The Cup doesn't have aircon, leather/alcantara seats, xenon headlamps, ABS or side airbags.

Has a slightly different braking system. slightly wider track, slightly stiffer suspension.

Also has a lot of weight removed i.e. Thinner glass, no engine cover etc.

hi mate i asked this question a bit a go the cup is about 100kg lighter i think because it does not have abs,air con,the fancy lights etc etc and also no leather int so it makes more bhp per tonne than the 172 does you are talking around .3 or .4 not even that difference which would be nothing on the road however i have heard that the cup is quicker than a wrx to a 100 which makes them quicker to 100 than the 172 of course but at the end of the day it all comes down to the driver and think on the road same driver same conditions etc there would not be much in it if anything!!! i believe the 182 has the same top speed but all in all is the same on the road again as the above two!!! i dropped the spare and went on 15 mate and it has made a difference so why not do that he he he!!!! if you buy the 182 manifold and put it on you are a 182 mate and i think one is for sale on her somewhere cheers bud

great, thanks alot for the info, i am happy with the performance from the 172 and since i am going to be driving to work i am more than happy to swap creature compforts for a little drop in performance

thanks

Duncan

cup doesnt have:
Leather/alcantara trim
Xenons
ABS
Aircon(some later models you could have it as an option)
rear headrests
split fold rear seat
spare wheel
leather seats
auto wipers (rain sensor)
auto lights
lacquered door mouldings
side airbags

it also has thinner glass than a full fat. Bound to be other things i've forgotten.

difference between a 172/cup/182 in terms of performance is nothing they do drive differently though. The cups are a bit more focused/sharper on turn in than a 172 as are the 182s with cup pack.

I Think There Is A More Impressive Difference Between Cup And 172/182's.........
I Have Always Easily Passed All Other Full Fats, And 182's........

  172 Cup
Easily? Doubtful..

I've owned both cars and there's no noticable differance performance wise. Perhaps after 70 laps of Donnington the Cup may have pulled out a lead but there is no way on earth you can have "easily passed" 172/182's unless they were in reverse.

Sorry just doesn't happen.

With the odd exception, standard v's standard, there's very little in it in a straight line. Little enough for that piece of biological matter at the controls to make the biggest difference.

Another main factor in straight line performance is whether or not you get a 'fast' one from the factory. Some Cups have done 14.5's standard on th1/4 mile. Others can't get below 15.

The biggest difference for me after driving the two back to back was definitely in the handling.

In the right hands, the Cups lower weight and better (for track) suspension set up would have it going considerably quicker round a track IMHO. It felt much sharper, cornered a bit flatter and it kept understeer at bay for longer than my 172.

Cup looks nicer. Mondial Blue is lovely. Overall the Cup is the quicker car, but not for the reason most people think.

And you need a lot more hp than someone to overtake them easily.

There are definately more important contributary factors than the pathetic factory quoted 0.2 second difference between the cars to 60. So its lighter, in a straightline drag you telling me that a cup with a 17 stone driver and a full tank of fuel will be quicker than a full fat driver who's 9stone and running on empty? Driver skill, load(fuel/passengers/audio in the boot), what the engines in both cars are kicking out etc (lets face it there is a disparity on power figures from car to car) will all play a part more so.

The Cup may only be fractionally quicker in a straightline, but they do drive differently... and look better IMO...

The setup differences gave it the 3mm lower ride height there were no spring changes.
Greater downforce is arguable a little spolier and front thng don't make any difference which you can tell.
Front track and rear was widened though the use of the diffferent offset no other changes to hube etc there are identical to full fat cars.

  RS Cosworth & Clio 172
interesting thread this as i'm new to all this clio stuff - guess i have a full fat lol but then i'm enjoying all the toys as its got all factory options.

bonus is that its doing 34mpg on a mixed run compared to the 12 mpg that my cossie does. thats why its our new daily driver (replacing a fiesta si).
I am impressed with it all round.

i had the choice between a full fat/cup, and went for the cup, purely on the basis that it looks the mutts nuts, and one came up at a great price (6.5K w/21000 miles)
