I'm sure someone told me it was for satnavs to get signal through the windscreen, but I always thought it was the rain sensor...

its like the above post said, as the windscreen is tinted due ot aircon etc that little square isnt tinted for either a sat nav or if you got an electronic tag that needs to be picked up or something.

my sat nav works fine on the normal parts lol

I'm 90% sure it's for tags used in France for toll roads. It comes in handy for Sat Navs as well however.

The rain sensor is at the top next to the light sensor.
The rectangular section at the bottom is for toll road auto toll booths I believe.
