I was fitting my crossovers today and I only had enough wire to do one side. I went to halfords to get wire for the other side and they only ahd a differnt gauge a much hevier cable which i used. Coudl this cause any problems?
Nahh it shouldnt cause u any problems, basically the thicker wire just allows current to pass thorugh quicker.. so if you have a 1500w sub thats what you want... whereas for speakers around the 100w mark.. any wire will do. Without causing problems.
Depends on your stereo output, the thicker the gauge the more resistance there is on the cable - therefore if your HU isn't pushing out enough wattage your speakers may get starved.
Disco, don't believe fungusman. Electricity doesn't flow through a thicker wire quicker.
And ozzyo99 has got it backwards. A thicker guage wire doesn't increase resistance. It decreases it.
Reduced wire thickness increases resistance. And more resistance in the wire decreases the volume that comes out of that speaker. So you'll get less volume out of the speaker on the side where the wire is thinner. But it'd have to be a lot thinner to make enough difference to be noticeable in a car.
Thank you Godon D!! And the others for your valient attempts!! I shall award the gold * to Gordon for the best answer demonstating a good knowladge of physics!! I am off to brush up my self!!
