Directional Tyre Tread - Concern!

  Pink & Blue 182, JDM DC2

Hi All,

Firstly, yes it does sound like the most boring topic in the world, so apologies but thanks to my friend Peter, I have noticed something strange about my tyres.

I have been and had a look at the tread pattern on my Clio Cups Continental sports, and noticed the following. The OS (drivers side) tyres tread faces down towards the road. This is in-line with the car travelling forwards, as the tread would be going towards the road.

However, the NS (passenger side) tyre tread faces the exact opposite. This applies to the rear tyre also. I have checked on two other Cups and the both have this same issue.

Now as me and my friend Peter discussed, tyre tread should always face downwards towards the road, and in line with the direction (forwards!) to reduce drag, and friction etc. More importantly performance in the wet as with the tread facing the wrong way, it will drag the water to the middle of the tyre, thus causing the car to aquaplane.

Can anyone confirm if their Cup is also like this, or likewise anyone with views on this please post. If you go and look at your car, it looks as though the tyre is on the wrong way round.

Maybe this could be what is causing the car to pull to the left so abruptly and on on even/loose surfaces, the high amount of torque? Just an idea..

Si.

If you check on the wall of your tyre, it should say "outside" on it. As long as this is visible then its on correctly.

Saw a car the other week with something like F1s on, with the directional fan tread, and both left side tyres were on the wrong way. He mustve got a lovely build-up of water in them.

Just checked mine and it does say outside, on the outside, but the way tread pattern runs must mean that it doesnt disperse water at all well. Bloody stupid if you ask me. It is almost as if your running with 4 OS tyres.

Yes Eagle F1s with the Fan tread, sooo nice, see that tyre should always face with the arrow-head of the Fan facing forwards, so why does the Conti-sport face the wrong way? Is it a safety issue?

Si.

Yep, your absolutely right, just checked my cup, and another cup... the passenger side tyres both say outside but the tread direction faces the wrong way.

I also tested out my brakes on a wet raod and sure enough it was the n/s tyre that locked up every time.

If it says outside then it looks like they have Fed up... There should be outside left and outside right! Ha ha...

^^^^^^Agree with Nicky

If you moved a tyre from the OS to the NS and kept the outside writing to the outside then the tread would indeed be back to front surely?

I mean, imagine if the car is driving and the wheels are turning. Now take the wheel off of the OS while spinning and walk round the front of the car keeping the outside writing on the outside. Keep going and stick the wheel on the other side and its going to be spinning like youre going backwards.

I think the point was that youd have thought Conti would have made two versions of the same tyre. A lefthanded version and a righthanded version, a la F1s etc.

They would both still read outside on the outside.

conti tyres i have had in the past have had an arrow showing direction for front and direction for back. the back is usually oposite from front.

bit scary how that sort of mistake could happen! should report it and see if a set of free tyres can be blagged!!:)

Ok so there I was thinking I was going mad!!!! Thanks for the support guys, but who can we speak to about this? Do we speak to Renault as they fitted the car with them, or do we speak to Conti?

The only contact I can find for Conti is in Germany. Anyone know a UK representative??

If someone posts the number, Ill call them.

Simon

Will call first thing tomorrow. They have all gone home. Obviously been reading this post!

My Bridgestone S02s and S03s have a directional arrow for rotation. Seem strange one side is diff to the other.

Maybe at the facrory they had a YTS lad in doing the tyres and he did them all for the right hand side. :0)

This was bugging me! So I went on a google mission, and found the answer, I think!

See info below from various sources, mainly continental home page...

The forerunner to the new ContiSportContact™ 2 was ContiSportContact performance patterned tyre. ContiSportContact is slowly being phased out but until the new sport pattern is manufactured in all the sizes this tyre is OEM replacement on most European cars.

Features of the ContiSportContact

• Improved wet traction with open inner shoulder

• Precise cornering stability and good steering precision

• Minimal rolling noise

• Available in Y, W and Z speed ratings

• OE on Europes finest sports cars, including the Porsche 911

Made for high-performance, this tyre has asymmetrical tread design and precise response which is why it was approved as original equipment on the Porsche 911.

Asymetrical tread pattern:

The distinct and asymmetrical tread pattern (1) has more rubber in the compact outer shoulder than in the inner shoulder. This extra rubber in the outer shoulder enables the tyre to have a larger contact area with the road. Your profit: Thanks to the asymmetric tread pattern with compact outer shoulder, cornering stability is increased, and a precise steering response of the tyre is ensured.

And spec of a simialr tyre...

The Conti Winter Contact TS 790 has an assymetrical, but not directional tread pattern.

For this reason the TS790 must be fitted with the sidewall lettering OUTSIDE facing outwards in order that the tyres performance is optimized.

When the tyre is fitted on the rim in this way, then it is the right way round and can be placed in any wheel position on the car.

ContiWinterContact TS 790 tyres fitted in accordance with the manufacturer´s recommendation

In order to optimize the traction properties of the tyre, the sipes in the tread pattern blocks are not positioned laterally, but angled. In the central ribs of he tread pattern, the sipes are angled in such a way that they oppose one another. This arrangement is designed to provide excellent high speed driving stability.

The fact that the tread pattern grooves are pointing forwards on one side of the car and backwards on the other side, does not in any way affect the overall performance of the tyre on wet or dry roads.

If the tyre is not mounted in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, then the special performance advantages of the assymetric tread pattern are not realised.

The assymetric tread pattern of the Conti Winter Contact TS790 is designed to cope with the different demands placed on the outer and inner shoulders. The outer shoulder tread pattern is more closed to provide outstanding driving stability in curves and excellent steering precision. The comparably high number of tread blocks in the inner shoulder guarantees the highest level of traction in snow due to the biting effect of the block edges.

The Conti Winter Contact TS 790 combines, not only because of its tread pattern, top class winter performance, a high level of safety and a striking appearance.

RESULT! STILL SEEMS DAFT TO ME THOUGH!

Well done! Sounds to me though all theyve done is design a universal tyre that can fit on any corner of the car without removal from the rim, still cant see how that can result in exact same cornering performance in the wet when turning left or right - maybe the reason the cups so edgy in the wet?

Maybe thats why they always do sh*t in the tyre tests compared to the Pirellis and Goodyears.

Pile of poo. Im sure the michelins I had on my Xsara were like that as well, which would explain why they do just as badly in the tyre tests.
