Do I have CAMS?

  182 Trophy
Hi everyone, I have a question about my 182 Trophy please. It has a few mods including cams which were fitted by a tuning company a couple of years ago. The thing is, I've recently discovered some negative words about the tuning company here on this site and am now a little worried if the cams were actually installed or if I was ripped off.

Just for piece of mind, I'm going to open the head and check if the cams are in there. What I'd please like to know is, once they're out and in my hands, how would I tell if they're oem or the aftermarket tuned ones? Is there any visible difference that I should look out for or would they have a company name or something? BTW they're Cat cams.

Thanks.

Should have some sort of model/part number stamped on them which you can google.

Any idea what brand of cams they are? Like piper or Kent?

They're Cat cams. The not-so-wild ones.

Yes I will be looking out for any writing or stamps/markings.

if they're cat cams then you'll be able to tell (or I would) by removing one of the bungs from the end of the head.

Thanks. What do I need to look out for please?

wouldnt a rolling road be able to tell if cams are installed, surely the rev range would be altered sufficiently to tell.

I took it on a RR a couple of years ago and got a poor reading. I through away the reading as it was quite embarrassing lol! but iirc I think it was 184 or 186hp. I have a few other mods too (maxogen, orbisoud, inlets and re-map) plus the cams are the "fast road" spec so I can't really tell. :S Maybe someone with a 182 without cams will be able to tell better.

Drive to Danny, pay him an hours labour, sorted.

Got to be easier than getting the head off.

Try and find some part number or marking, if u can or can't find them just ring the original manufacturer, I had to some chasing up about a turbo I had before on my five, n turbotechnics were a real help.Itl be cheaper than paying for labour or a rolling road

Ahhhh, I didn't even look at that.

Ok,

Drive to Fred. Pay him a 4 pack of redbull and 40 marlboro lights, got to be easier than taking the head off?

might help to know where they came from. I suspect they're Cat 420s so actually just standard profiles

that rolling road figure is proberly about right depending on the rollers mate alot of standard 182s only make 160s etc

would you not be able to tell by the idle aloan that it had been cammed?

but as above fred/danny be best people to go and ask

Yes it probably is right as the cams aren't aggressive but the RR was pretty old so maybe not so accurate. Still, I think it's worth the piece of mind to get it checked.

The idle is kind of lumpy but that could just be the burbling from the exhaust. :S Lol!

I'd love to see pictures of the trophy mate, sounds like it has all of the best stuff on it :)

Easiest way to tell without taking anything apart is to take the oil cap off and shine a torch inside the head. Look at the cam lobe, standard renault cams have lobes which are not integral to the cam they are 9 piece: 8 seperate lobes and 1 shaft the lobes are pressed on. If they are catcams or similar then they will be ground from a billet so will be 1 piece.
