Do you blip the throttle of down changes?

to make the change smoother by matching the free revs with the revs of the next, lower engaged gear??

Ive started doing this as I think its better for the clutch and puts less stress on the synchro mesh. Am I right??

Yes, it's how you are supposed to drive :) brake with your toes on your right foot and use you heal to blip,

Yes you're right it does decrease wear, but unless you're driving around like a loon everywhere I'd not bother. Just make sure you're timing your changes right and that should be sufficient.

Save it for a car with more power and when you're on track.

I dunno it definately helps to avoid un-balancing the car when pressing on (or perhaps thats driving like a loon!).

I like the extra smoothness even when driving normally too.

If pootleing through town I tend not to do it. If driving spiritidly then I do.

Ditto.
Althou i dont really heal toe. Im kinda lazy, i cover both pedals with one foot, i find as the pedals are so close together its quite easy.

I tend to do it only when giving the car stick. Much better/easier to get a decent blip with a decatted car. I find on the 172/182 the cat suffocates the car too much and doesnt rev as freely/nicely.

only do it if I'm thrashing the high heavens out of it or on track. My pedal layout isn't idea though, so that's another thing on the list of things to change/do

I heel and toe all the time on semi serious to full on serious hooning.

Much more satisfying braking at the same time and getting it right.

Isn't this how you're supposed to drive?

Lots of people on here don't seem to do it though :S maybe that's why so many clio gearboxes/clutches die so soon. :rasp:

i do it all of the time tbh, and then heel and toe when i'm smashing it

as Loony said too, mine's much more responsive with the decat & Milltek now!

If you jump straight in another car after the DCI, you hit the limiter when down shifting (laggy throttle).

But yeah, if I'm slowing down I'm doing heel and toe, if I'm changing down.... To be honest even my driving instructor taught me to add a bit of throttle to meet the next gear down.

You one about rev matching on downchanges or double-declutched downshifts or both? Just rev matching won't save the syncros, dd'ing will. Can tell by how smooth the change is, even though its superflous I tend to do it when i'm dropping a cog at high revs hate how it feels if you just stick it in gear.

is'nt heel and toe when you're braking with the (right foot) heel meanwhile hitting the throttle with your toes (same foot) and doing the clutch with your left foot ? All at the same time ?

I ca'nt find the link of the Ragnotti video, it's wild !
In this matter he takes those corners in Rally races like a madman !

I've noticed that when driving Peperami's Cup. The blips feel really good. Mine is by no means suffocated (sports exhaust and cat) but his with the decat is spot on.

Its something I've been practising for 7 years.

Better still when I used to have scoobys , left foot braking whilst flooring it to keep the turbo boosting, wasn't a master at that but could do it good enough I suppose.

you see there mate, heel and toe-ing is misunderstood here i think..
plus you need women's feet to do it in a Reno hahhaha

I also think it was Ragnotti driving the 5-turbo in those vids. Incredible...

If you master this, you should be racing

franx, heal and toe isn't hard. Sure it takes a while to get used to it when you first do it.

I think I started a few months into driving for the first time, watched a bunch of videos on a board (Greg's Shifting School) and practiced every time I went out. Didn't feel good for many many weeks. Lots of diving into the steering wheel and lots of slipping clutch.

A few years on and I would say I can do pretty much anything there is to be done with pedals. I'm not a racing driver and I know many others on here do the same. It's just a case of making the effort to practice in the first place.

It's hard when having size 11....
It's not used in everyday driving, very little peolple now how to use it correctly, to use it with benefit..

I might trie it some more then ;)

I double de-clutch when downshifting to 4th at high speed on the motorway, sometimes do a blip on normal downshifts. Heel & toe I've dabbled with but it only really works when you're driving hard.

I'm size 10. Do it in the vans whilst wearing safety boots/wellies..... Ok, I rarely do it in the vans or company cars, I prefer to not even use the clutch then.

I was thinking about doing some tutorial videos, there's a new car community website on the way so I might have it as a feature on there. In which case you'll have to wait.

PS My dad has 40 odd years driving experience, he doesn't do it.;)
