Do your wipers do this!

Driving along in the rain last night with my wipers on normal speed, pulled up at some lights looked over my shoulder at the bird in the car behind me an when i looked forward again my wipers werent moving! flipped it down to fast and back to normal again and they carried on as normal. the same thing happened 3 more times - the stalk was in on and the wipers were going into intermittent. p.s. i havent got auto-wipers, just the normal ones where the rotating bit of the stalk controls intermittent speed.

any ideas what might be wrong here, or has yours ever done this?

are the wipers computer controlled in some way?

cheers guys,

Liam

yeah theres nothing to worry about, they all do it when you come to a stop, smart wipers..

they are called smart wipers mate.

when you have your wipers on normal constant and stop at some lights they go into intermittent mode, then when you pull away they go back to constant.

the one that got me was when i first got my cup and had the wipers on and stuck the car in reverse. the back wiper started going and i thought there was something wrong

the smart wiper system means that when you stop the uch puts the wipers in the next speed down.

EG-fast speed>normal speed

-normal speed>intermittant

the wipers should automatically return to the speed that the wiper stalk is in as soon as you start moving again.try putting the int roller switch in the quickest position(position with the least time gap between wipes).have a quick look at all the fuses in the fuse board on the n/s end of the dashboard behind the flap.the smart wipers are controlled by the vehicle uch so other than the fuses there is nothing you can really check so would probably req dealer attention.Your rear wiper should do one wipe when you select reverse.this is also controlled by the uch so also pointing to a blown fuse or a uch problem.if your vehicle is still under warranty i would let the dealer have a look as the diagnostic equipment may show up the problem straight away.

i knew it was gonna be controlled by the UCH!!

that uch on my car has a lot to answer for... even if i dont have rain-sensitive wipers should they still be switching speeds like that? the reverse activated sweep still works as advertised anyway.

the smart wiper system is on all clios apart from ones with the rain sensitive wipers because obviously its not needed on this type due to the rain sensor switches off the wipers if the screen is dry.the uch controls most of the electrical systems on the car im afraid.

when i first had the car i kept putting the wipers faster, then had to turn them slower again when i was moving. took me a few weeks to get used to it!

a uch is an intelligant electronic switching unit.as well as being able to carry out complex fuctions such as the immobiliser system it also contains all the switching relays.this now means one single unit now does the job that would be normally done by a lot of relays and seperate computers.

sometimes a simple configuration problem can make the uch do funny things.luckily though uchs can be reconfigured etc if something isnt quite right.
