document properties option missing on right click

  Rav4
Hi,

I have some word and PDF documents which I cannot open.

When I right click on them, my options are limited and does not contain properties.

I can open some documents in the folder.

Documents are stored on a server and permissions have not been touched.

The documents affected have no "A" under the attributes column.

Any ideas?

Providing you have the appropriate permissions the only other thing I can thing is:
Are they in loads of subfolders with long names? If the entire path/name is too long the OS can't recognise them. Try moving them to another location if possible or rename the document to something shorter.

id say the file title combined with the directory listing is too long

say c:\wwwwwww\dffdfffffff\ggggggggggg\gggggggggg\rabit.pdf

it will be too long

They originally give me another path name which was half the size.

People!!!

What's the limited character set?

What pics would you like, I have some awesome ones!

supposedly 255 for file name and 260 iirc for path and file name but in reality it is closer to 230 from what i read the other week when i had this issue

If your client OS is Windows Vista you can get around the issue by mapping a network drive to one of the folders further down the path.
I think older versions of Windows still reference file names on mapped drives via their full UNC path though, so it doesn't work.

Cheers Mr Stone,

We pretty much all use XP bar a couple of users who use 2000.

Vista is not on the cards and don't think it will be,

Some users find it hard enough to turn on/off the machine.

A question the other day was, " Gabi, my wired mouse is acting strange, could it be due to the power problems on the road, or do I need to replace the batteries?"

LOL.

I once had to replace a completely dead PSU in this woman's PC years ago, and she goes "Will it make it much faster?"

I also had people putting CD's in upside down and a bloke who was worried because his floppy drive kept making clicking noises. I really am glad I don't do 1st line tech support anymore.
