Does ICE affect Performance?

  Alfa 147 GTA
Hi all,

My first post! Bought myself a mint black valver (only 48000 miles!), and want to install a good quality sound system in there.

Planning on the front components, amp and sub. BUT i also want performance.

Will this install affect my speed? After the install, do you notice the extra weight?

cheers

poeple say you can notice the difference but honestly a sub is what in a bout 15kilos and then ur amp maybe 5kilos and compenets well they way nothing, so i think it would make a differnce about 1 mph top end lol i think it is only extreme racers [lol] who are really bothered.

well my ice has got to weight about 50kgs so that has got to affect the performance alot

Hi im a newbie but i fit car audio for a living so hope this helps.

Its not the extra weight so much although it does play a factor, more the extra drain on the battery for the amp.

A standard amp even at low volume will take up to 14.4 volts from the car, more if its cranked up to the amps max this in turn makes the engine work harder as the altrnator can only do so much. So its a bit like swithing you air conditioning on, you feel the dip and power loss but a amp stays on from the minute you turn the car on

I had this problem in my evo and had to uprate the alternator to a diesel one. Another way is to use a split charging system with a dry cell battery so the amp draws from the dry cell

hope this helps

you will be quite surprised how much difference it makes.
Just get a decent set of speakers, thats all you need.
Engine/exhaust noise is so much more enjoyable ;)

Basically, weight and the drain will affect performance. You can help the drain out by uprating the alternator or using a split charge, but at the end of the day it wont be worth it. Accept the loss.

energy cannot be created or destroyed

so no matter how big an alt you put on it will still draw the same power so still the same power loss at the engine

depends how big the install is my install consists of 2 15" t rexs and they weigh a ton the delivery man couldnt carry them and that takes loads off my performance. but if its the one sub you should have no dramastic diffrence

Thanks for the replies.

The install will not be huge, just one 10" sub and the amp. anyone know roughly how much that would weigh? i'm guessing that a new exhaust and de-cat that i plan to put on it would offset the performance lost to the ice

if performance = economy then yes, when the cars running the battery is getting charged so nearly all electricity comes from fuel.

weight is the biggest issue, not battery drain

and yes, the bigger the install, the more weight you will gain. and the PWR will drop

135bhp car at 950kg = 142.1 bhp/tonne
135bhp car at 1000kg = 135bhp/tonne

id say you'd notice a 50kg difference

So even if i forget about the sub and just amp the components up i'm still going to see a dip in performance due to the load on the battery from the amp?
