Does it cost a shedload to run a 172

I think you're in an identical situation to me this week!

I went looking at this baby last Wednesday, having discounted Evo's for years....

It was perfect for me - just perfect. Literally everything I want from an Evo - but the insurance killed it for me as it was modified. A Group 20 car was never going to cheap to insure, but paying £1,800+ per year for a car that I would only use two days a week (max) - was just too much, imo.

You seem to have considered everything else though. The fuel, the tyres, the value of the car itself. If its really what you want and it won't cripple you financially - then go for it.

Who knows, once you're bored of the 172, my 182 might be up for sale by then! Touch wood, nothing major has gone wrong with mine yet and its knocking on the door of 50k. Great little motors...

I let the trip go for about 3,500 milres recently after the clutch change, and including three trackdays and spirited road driving it was showing 37 mpg, which works out as a real 34 mpg.

As Clarkson said, it's impossible to go faster for less.

This may be worth noting for future comparison reasons, as I just did a 2,600 mile trip round Europe, 3 up with some luggage in my R27. This included 4 laps (about 50 miles?) of the ring at a very spirited pace heh - and then there was half a day up and down mountains, lots of acceleration/braking etc. Anyway, my trip was showing 30.1mpg, till the 1,113 mile drive home with the cruise set at about 90mph. When I got home it was saying, IIRC (I'll check tmrw as it hasn;t moved since heh!) 28.9mpg.

Tax is the only thing that f**ks me off....seems ridiculous paying so much for a car which is actually quite economical.

Funnily enough my 172 is the most economical car ive ever owned, 35+ mpg constantly, on a run ive seen 45+ aswell :-|

I think it helps save if you have basic mechanical abilities. For example if you service the car yourself, or if say the rear discs/bearings need replacing. Would you be comfortable doing this yourself?? Ive saved a hell of a lot by fixing the car myself. Every now and then something may need tweaking or checking.

As for mpg around town it can drop down in the low 30s but on the motorway at 70 it can reach 41. You can use 95ron fuel with no problems.

Another thing is check everything on the car before you buy, have a good read of both buyers guides in the forum. When I was looking at 172s it took me ages to find one that had a decent gearbox and engine. The 172mk1 I brought externally was a bit tatty but mechanically it was spot on.

yeah they're budget pocket rockets. Indicated 35/36 mpg all day every day. Fastest, best handling AND cheapest car i've run!

Yep will agree with pretty much everything said on here. I have kept it serviced at Renault as they could then sort out warranty issues at every service.

Only things Ive had to shell out for is new discs and pads from Yozza for around £200.

Nothing has gone wrong that wasnt covered under warranty. Just over 49k now and still on the original exhaust, shockers etc.

Only pricey things are tax at £210 for 12 months and tyres at around £85 a corner. Well worth it for the pace and if u feather the throttle I have had 35 mpg around town.

just make sure you get a decent one, make sure the cambelt and aux belt are done, rear disks are £200 so watch out for that, make sure exhaust isnt hanging off or about to fall off, and the rear dampers arnt leaking.

£150 for 2 eagle F1s too so make sure tyres are decent enough

I use about £40-£60 per week petrol, and £80 insurance per month.
Thats in my Trophy though but 172 is exactly the same engine so shouldnt make much difference.
Just do it, u wont regret it.

£85 a corner? Think they seen you coming mate, you can get Toyo Proxes TR1's for £44 notes a corner

As said again mate everywher in britains priced diffrently dependant on where you look to possibly price somthing specificly is gonna be very vauge from the outset!
