Does my 182 have cams!?

  Williams 2
Only had the car a month and not had the chance to drive it loads, i picked up a mate today who has his own garage (mechanics MOT's etc) and he said it sounded lumpy at idle and asked if it had uprated cams.

I can see the car has had a pipercross carbon induction kit, and scorpion rs192 cat-back, it also turns out (with help from this forum) that it likely has the RS tuner remap too.

Apart from pulling off the cam cover are there any tell tale signs of a 182 that has had uprated cams fitted?

Is it maybe just mis-firing?

Haha i hope not!

But seriously, there's no misfiring, the car runs faultlessly.

It is lumpy at idle though, just wondered if there are any other 'clues' that it had been cammed (apart from getting dirty under the bonnet!), never had a car that has had uprated cams, nor have I ever driven a 182 before!

Are 182's 'lumpier' than 172's at idle?

As my mate who made the comment has 2 172's, and mine is noticeably more 'off-beat' at idle than either of his, thats why he mentioned it, it may just be standard but it is really noticeable and it not a fault for sure...

I thought this about my old 106 GTi. Turns out it was a freak of a car, 139bhp on a seemingly standard set up, it went from 60-135mph faster than any Clio i've had lol...

Well I wanted to get an idea on the likelihood of it having cams before I started pulling things apart under the bonnet, but I suppose i'll have to get my hands dirty sometime soon to confirm...

It's roughly a 3 hour job to looks and see if you have cams, that's if you are pretty quick at changing a 172 Cambelt.
if its your first time though, allow at least twice as long, and be prepared to spend 300 quid in parts and tools.

Then you will know if it has cams or not.

or just stop worrying about it ;)

^you on drugs? its a 3sec job to see if it has cams, remove the oil cap and look ;)

Flol.
or even quicker just get the key and turn it over, if you hear compression or it starts then the valves must be opening and shutting so by definition it "has cams"

If you had a reallly clever dick then you could poke it down the oil cap and use it to clock the difference between a reground or standard cam perhaps? Lol

Serious reply to OP:

The most common reason for these cars sounding "cammed" is that the standard cams were timed badly the last time the belt change was done, TBH thats far more likely than you having 600 quids worth of 421s that the previous owner "forgot" to mention when selling the car.

Thanks for most of the responses.

I bought it from a trader rather than an enthusiast so the only modifications I knew about were the obvious ones that I could see when I viewed the car, all the trader showed me was service history and reciepts.

Wouldn't you guys like to know what the car has got or hasn't got if you've not long had it? Its clearly been modified with the exhaust, induction and RS tuner so i'd like to know how far they went engine wise.

Will be getting it on a rolling road very soon, can anyone recommend somewhere good around SE london/Kent or the Dartford crossing area? I used to go to AMD when I had my Audi but I dont really like their attitude and apparently the rollers can be a bit generous.

Slightly further afield, but if you go to surrey rolling road, there have been hundreds of clios done there (CS rolling road days) so you should have no problem finding a reference point to compare yours against,

Great, cheers.

Any guys from Kent/Essex way ever do a group meet for a rolling road session?

Would like to compare cars on the same rolling road!
