Does the Horn work without the engine on?

Bit of an odd request here. Going to try and wire up a horn button on the dash this evening. But the engine isnt in a state where i could switch it on. Just wondering if anyone knows if just the ignition would power the horn? or if the engine has to be on....

Before i go chasing wires thinking its not working etc.

It will be off the perm live, otherwise you couldn't alert someone to your position / danger if you were parked.

Ph1 stalk is usually the easy go-to assuming you've an aftermarket steering wheel ?

Good point. Ive built a small switch panel so I’m going to run the wires to there I think. Presuming there’s just two wires connecting to the steering wheel hub somewhere. Was going to just extend them to the centre dash.

Do you need it to be road legal ?

Just perhaps be careful you can reach it when strapped in ?!

It’s going just under the hazards button. Yeah will be road legal but mainly used for track days and the occasional outing at a weekend when we have good weather

Just jumping on this thread save starting a new one.

Just put a sabelt cup racer steering wheel in so obv no horn button.

Plan is to put a momentary switch on the dash somewhere.

I touched the two horn wires together yesterday and it honked as it should.

Today I fitted the switch which lights up when I press it but no honkey honkey noise.

Any ideas?

Steering Wheel Advice

I am looking at getting a Sabelt Renault Sport steering wheel for my 172 Cup. Any one know what the required boss kit is for the cup? And I presume will need the horn panel also for MOT requirements. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Mark
