Does this sound dodgy

Just phoned Xtreme about buying a steering wheel (pg 78 in this months Max Power if you want a look) and they said they dont accept credit/debit cards.

So they gave me the address and Im suppose to send a cheque there for £124 (£102 for the wheel and £22 for the hub - not bad I thought)

Never dealt with a company that does business like this so what are peoples thoughts........

Never heard of them nor seen the ad but theres a chance it could a one man band who gets stuff cheap that works from home etc!!

I wouldnt say there dodgy as take for example e-bay! Most People dont accept credit/debit cards!!

Is it a proper address? I.e not a PO Box number!!

If so then have a look on Yell.com or 192.com for the address and make sure its genuine!

P.s if you have there address you can always go round n kick the sh*t out of em if they rip you off!!

cheques are as traceable as cards. Maybe just starting up. If he was dodgy hed have asked for postal orders or cash. Suprised he doesnt at least have a paypal account

if its a one man job and just started then hes probably not VAT registered anyway, only once you hit around 69K ( or somewhere round that figure) do you have to start paying VAT.

not unusual not to have a machine to swipe the card with and cos they have asked for a cheque and not cash like others have said its sound.

the fact they advertise in the mag mean s they have dished out big$ for the ad so its legit. havent seen the ad cos i dont get max but im assuming its a fair size...

Well its not an ad as such.

Its in Fresh Stuff just showing new products on the market and they are the contact for them.

It costs about £500 to set up a PDQ machine to accept cards, so if they are a new company they might not take cards for that reason (also businesses have to pay between 3 and 7% of transaction values to the card issuers on every transaction) if they are a cheap as chips type outfit they might not be able to take the % charge that accepting cards in their profit margins.
